It is with profound sorrow that we share the news of the passing of Michael (Mike) Anthony McGrath, a cherished husband, dad, grandpa, and brother, who left us on February 23 at the age of 79. Mike's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, family, and cherished memories, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Born in Chicago in 1944, Mike's journey was one defined by humor, compassion, and unwavering commitment. For 56 years, he stood as a steadfast companion to his wife, Carol, navigating life's joys and challenges. Their love for each other was a beacon of strength, forged through shared experiences, laughter, and unwavering support.
As a dad, Mike's unwavering love and devotion for his two daughters was enormous. His legacy lives on through Lynn (Jeff) MacKenzie and Kristen (Kevin) Ostheimer. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and found pure joy in witnessing them build their own families. Mike did an amazing job at always expressing his unconditional love and never-ending pride in Lynn and Kristen.
Mike's role as Grandpa/Pepa brought him pure happiness. He leaves behind a cherished legacy in his grandkids: Taylor, Michael, Jackson, and Rachel. The grandkids have incredible memories of sleepovers, scootering, raiding Grandpa's 'secret' candy stash and his funny and good-natured personality. He was the grandpa that would get on the floor to play, pick them up from school, and take them to the park for ice cream.
Beyond his roles as a loving husband, dad and grandpa, Mike was also a caring brother and the oldest of six. He is survived by his siblings, Terrence (Pat) McGrath, Kathy Serfin, Mary Seidenfaden, Chris (Debra) McGrath, and the late Dennis McGrath, with each holding cherished memories of shared moments and a lifetime of love.
Mike pursued his bachelor degree at Wayne State University and Michigan State University, and earned a J.D. from the Detroit College of Law. Early in his career, he made an impact on many young lives as an English high school teacher. The majority of his professional life Mike thrived as a corporate lawyer in the insurance industry. He was passionate about his work and loved what he did.
Mike loved going to the movies, music, reading, going to live Broadway and symphony performances and spending time with his family.
Mike's guidance and counsel was a source of strength and comfort to those around him. His kindness, humor, and wisdom created a welcoming atmosphere that will be sorely missed.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Mike's life will take place at the O'Brien/Sullivan Funeral Home, 41555 Grand River Novi, on Sunday, March 3, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 7:00pm. A formal Celebration to honor Mike's life is scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2024, at 11:00 am. at the funeral home.
