At 6:51 PM on Friday, September 27th, in Cleveland, Ohio, 'Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk played softly in the background as Michael James Meyers, 77, of Mantua, Ohio, passed away peacefully. Husband to Christine, son of Jane and Frank, brother to Frank, Dad to Erika and Jason, beloved Papa to Taylor, and Mocha Mike to so many Northeast Ohio coffee houses who each called him their favorite customer.

Mike often referred to himself as just a guy from Woodland Avenue, but anyone who knew him knew he was so much more. Born on May 17, 1947, Mike had a passion for Jazz, playing bass and trumpet, talking history, drinking coffee, and making you question whether or not the moon landing was real. A long-time jazz performer across the region with his best friend, Doug Dostal, Mike shared his joy of life through performing the tunes he adored.

Mike married the love of his life, Christine, on November 4, 1972. Together, they formed a lifelong agreement that would prevent Mike from ever cooking in the kitchen. After Christine discovered his signature dish, the "Grey Volcano Burger," he was banned from touching the stove again. Instead, Mike enjoyed 51 years of an endless variety of homemade pies, French onion soup, and his favorite meal, orange duck, all lovingly prepared by Christine.

A 1968 graduate of John Carroll University, Mike would use his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology to do the exact opposite of what he spent years studying in school. He worked for many local pest control companies and would often offer the following piece of advice to his children: Find something that you really like to do, that other people don’t know how to do, and be good at it.

Mike’s humor, love for family, and passion for music will live on in our family.

As John Coltrane said in the liner notes of his most famous 1965 record: “Words, sounds, speech, men, memory, thoughts, fears, and emotions – time – all related…all made from one…all made in one. Blessed be his name.”

A love supreme it truly was, and we’re forever grateful for every song we shared together.

The family welcomes friends and loved ones to join them in celebrating the life of Michael James Meyers in Mantua, Ohio, on Saturday, October 26th, between 2 and 6 pm. Parking will be available in the University Hospitals parking lot at 10803 Main St, Mantua, OH 44255.
