Mike, age 82, a resident of Daphne, Alabama, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, after a sudden illness. Born on December 23, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana, while his father proudly served in the United States Navy, Mike was truly a "war baby," entering the world during a time of great national sacrifice.
Growing up first in Birmingham and later in St. Petersburg after his family relocated, Mike distinguished himself early as a natural leader. He served as president of both his junior and senior high school classes, was voted "Most Popular" his senior year and was active in basketball. He also had a special fondness for his cherished Studebaker, a reflection of his lifelong appreciation for style and craftsmanship.
Throughout his professional life, Mike was a successful and highly respected independent manufacturer's representative, beginning in women's apparel and later transitioning into better furniture. Ever adaptable and forward-thinking, he also excelled in the advertising and mortgage industries as business climates evolved. His colleagues and clients alike valued his integrity, flexibility, and personable spirit.
Mike loved deeply and lived fully. He adored his wife, Mary, his boys, Craig, Kyle, Corey, and Casey, and his growing family. He had a passion for watches and an appreciation for the finer things in life. Gifted with a keen eye for gardening and landscape design, he and Mary lovingly updated and enhanced several homes over the years, creating beautiful spaces filled with warmth and hospitality. They shared a deep love of music and an enduring affection for their beloved puppies-especially their cherished Shih Tzu, Princess, who was treated every bit like royalty.
On February 1, 2026, Mike was diagnosed with influenza and pneumonia, which took a severe toll on his body. Though his passing was sudden, his legacy of love, leadership, and devotion remains strong in the hearts of those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Pridmore Smith and "Dick" Richard Nail Smith; his sister, Cindy Smith Radtke; and his brother, Steve Smith.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Mary Miller Smith, whose life was forever blessed the day they were introduced by her sister, Robin Miller-who first met Mike and thoughtfully brought the two together. He is also survived by his four sons, Craig Michael Smith of Austin, Texas, his wife Sara, their daughter Adeline, and twins Henry and Riley; Kyle Christopher Smith of Austin, Texas, his wife Jeni, and their children Connor and Callie; Corey Richard Smith of Richardson, Texas, and his wife Brandy; and Stephen Casey Smith of Dallas, Texas, his wife Chelsea, and their daughter Landry.
Visitation will take place at Resthaven Funeral Home on Friday, February 20, 2026, beginning at 1:00 PM until services at 2:00 PM. Burial to follow at Resthaven Gardens of Memory.
Serving as pallbearers are his sons, Craig Michael Smith, Corey Richard Smith, and Stephen Casey Smith; nephews Robby Miller and William Miller; great-nephew Sean Freeman; and nephews-in-law Bill Freeman and Brad Sandridge.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of The Retreat at Saad Hospice, whom they believe were found by Divine Intervention. Special thanks are also given to Dr. Hudson at Thomas Hospital, and to nurses Louisa (MICU) and Natalye (Room 2222) for their exceptional skill, care, and kindness during Mike's final days.
The family is especially grateful to The Rev. Thack Dyson, Rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Eastern Shore, for his faithful presence, prayers, and spiritual comfort during Mike's illness. His compassionate guidance and steadfast support brought great peace to Mike and to the entire family during a difficult time.
Mike will be greatly missed by his devoted wife, his sons, grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends. He will forever be remembered as a truly fine southern gentleman.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
