Michael M. Mitchell died peacefully at his home in Windsor, Colorado, on October 18, 2025, following a long illness. Mike was born on December 1, 1946, in Boulder. He spent his entire childhood in Brush, where he graduated from Brush High School in 1964. He attended and graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder, and was active in Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. Following graduation from the University in 1968, he entered the US Air Force, where he became a pilot and flight instructor.
During this time, Mike married Carolyn Brown of Brush and was the proud father of Jason Mitchell, born in 1974. This marriage ended in 1976, but Mike always remained close to Carolyn.
Mike loved to work and had many different careers in Eastern Colorado and Brush. He enjoyed working at the Trinidad Benham Bean Elevator both in Brush and Greeley, where he became a pinto bean aficionado. He ran the La Farge batch plant in Boulder and was a road and bridge supervisor in Larimer County. His pig farm near Brush was his happy place, and pigs were probably his favorite animals. Mike, his business partner, Betty, and his son, Jason, purchased mobile home parks in northeastern Colorado. They all worked hard to improve each of the parks and were able to provide many families with affordable homes in their years of ownership. They were some of the first turnaround artists.
Mike took his position as the oldest son in the family very seriously. He frequently visited his parents, Donald and Kathryn Mitchell, in Brush, and helped out around the farm where he had grown up. He also provided invaluable repairs and maintenance at the summer cabin in Grand Lake.
Mike loved to travel both within the U.S. and internationally. The Philippine Islands, Mexico, Greece, France, and Peru were some of his favorite destinations. He enjoyed attending the CU football games in Boulder, participated in the Senior Olympics across the U.S., and generally lived a full, fun, and productive life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Cherie Mitchell, and his grandsons Mason and Maddox, all of Littleton. Mike’s siblings are Donald R. (Pete) Mitchell of Ft. Morgan, Andrew W. Mitchell of Denver, Christine Custer of Brownsville, MN and Jane Wallace of Colorado Springs.
Plans for a Celebration of Life are pending. Mike never cared much for flowers, so please make a donation in his memory to any food bank near you.
