I have been thinking a lot about the time I spent with my dad, from back when I can remember. Thinking about the things he was either knowingly or unknowingly teaching me along the way. Without listing all the things I could think of, which were many. There was one central thought, one common theme: he was there for me. Whether it was one of our days with him or the occasional sleepover at his house when Eric and I were younger, countless soccer games, or when he would come visit me at school. It wasn´t ideal and it wasn´t storybook but he did the best he could. Through it all though, he was there for me to be my dad and most importantly to be my friend.
For the last week, every time I close my eyes, all I have seen are flashbacks of the different experiences I had with my dad. I realized after some time that they were all good things. Not to say that everything was perfect, but more to say that I am happy to know that my memories of dad are good. There are so many of them and so many of them include my family and friends, it made me realize how lucky we all were to have those experiences with him. Whether its him Eric and I just cruising in our tiny fishing boat on lake Nokomis heading up the river to fish (at 6 AM with a cooler FULL of beer). Friday night bowling league with him Eric Cassy and Julie, playing softball with him and all of my friends, countless rounds of golf that almost always included a special guest in the way of family or friends (where I always insisted on playing for money against dad, he always beat me but he ALWAYS used his winnings to buy the beer afterwards... ) Through all these memories I realized- these are not just my experiences with my dad but these are experiences I shared with my dad and other family and friends where I got to see first-hand just how much people truly enjoyed him. It always made me proud to have him around, it always made me proud when I would see him interacting with the people I know and care about and to hear from them later how cool, nice, or hilarious dad was. It was always positive and I never got tired of hearing it.
Of all the words I could think to describe my dad, the two that stick out the most to me, the two that describe not only what I saw in him but what so many others have told me they thought about him- kind and funny. (I am sure I owe my use of sarcasm and self-deprecating humor to him). Kind and funny, two things I aspire to be, that I try to portray to others- just as dad did to all of us.
If years down the road when my boys grow up and reflect upon how they feel about me as their dad- if they feel even ½ of the love, pride, friendship, appreciation (and sadness) that I feel for my dad, I would be proud- Dad should be proud too, because I owe so much of it to him.

I worked with Mike at coral Mercedes in Highland in 1986. Mike Tony and myself always had fun behind the counter and getting a good laugh From each other. Even though I lost touch with Mike over the years I truly remember him for a great person that he was and he will truly be missed by everybody that he impacted. My prayers and condolences to the family and may he be at peace
