Michael Kevin Mullen, 84, of Salem died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital, Centralia, fortified by the sacraments of the Church, on Monday, May 12, 2025, after a brief illness.
Michael was born to John H. and Lillian (Bailey) Mullen on August 13, 1940, in Alton, Illinois, the second of their four children. He attended St. Ambrose School in Godfrey, IL and Marquette Catholic High School in Alton. On October 1, 1960, he married the love of his life, Constance (Connie) Boss. Together they raised five children.
Mike spent over 30 years in the employment of Illinois Bell, and later Ameritech. Retiring early, he and Connie loved to travel, perhaps nowhere more than to Notre Dame football games. They also loved to tell stories of their international trips. They rejoiced in bringing Christmas cheer to so many children year after year as Father and Mrs. Christmas. They spent almost all their retired years together. During her long struggle with Alzheimer's, Mike stood by Connie's side every day.
Mike was an avid reader, a self-taught Civil War buff (and guest lecturer) and carpenter, a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Board of Salem Fire Protection District, and a founder and last surviving member of the Sorries. Together with his Bride, they offered many hours of talent at their beloved St. Theresa of Avila parish in Salem, leading almost every parish organization at one time or another. He loved to see a moving train.
Michael was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Connie, his daughter Kelley Ann Mullen, his brothers John and Tom.
He is survived by his loving family: Michele & David Steele, Patrick & Patty Mullen, Fr. Godfrey Mullen, OSB, and John & Jan Mullen, fifteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, his sister Sheila Mullen, and his fellow parishioners of St. Theresa.
The family is particularly grateful to our caring friends at High Pointe Residence Salem South, Centralia Manor, St. Mary's Hospital, his at-home helpers, and Sharon's Cafe.
A visitation will take place on Sunday, May 18, from 3:00 to 6:00PM at St. Theresa Church, 812 W. Main St., Salem. Visitation at the church will continue from 9:00 to 10:30AM on Monday, May 19. A funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, May 19 at 10:30AM. Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery, Godfrey, Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are highly encouraged to St. Theresa of Avila Church and will be accepted at the church or at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem who is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences and memories can be left at www.CrouseFH.com.
