Mike was peacefully called to his Lord and Savior on March 5th at his home in
Brevard, NC after a brave battle with cancer. He was 73.
Born May 11, 1952, in
Minneapolis, MN to parents George and Sue Nugent, Mike was the first of seven children.
Raised in
Edina, MN Mike attended Christ the King, South View Jr High, and Valley View Jr High Schools. He was a 1970 graduate of Edina High School and attended St. Cloud State University .
As a youth he was an altar boy, played hockey, football & skied. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, outdoors and NASCAR. Several father/son hiking trips were made to the Superior Hiking Trail of the MN/Canada border, applying the lessons learned as a boy scout.
Mike met the love of his life, Kim (Cheney), while at the Ohio home office of his employer. After a short engagement, they joined hands in marriage Nov 27, 1981, in Elyria Ohio. Together they were blessed with and proudly raised three amazing children, Bryon (
Naples, FL), Kelly (Brittany-
Brevard, NC) and Marshall (Tayler-Wilmington, NC).
Aside from family, Mike's greatest passion were his 4-legged companions. Mike joined Central Minnesota Retriever Club over 20 years ago, which initiated a remarkable journey with new friends and dogs. Mike immediately stepped up to help CMRC with the daily maintenance of the property, club house, and equipment. He willingly jumped into working the club events: Informal Trials, Hunt Tests and Field Trials while wearing many caps – bird thrower, bird steward, stakes chair, go-fer, marshal, and judge. Mike went on to join the clubs at Benton Retriever Grounds and shared his time and talents. He met new people through the dog world while establishing close and dear friendships.
Mike made his living in the powder coatings industry, where his technical expertise was both well respected and sought after. His efforts aided in the development of some of the largest and most innovative powder coatings systems in existence.
Mike was an easy going soul, a faithful provider, weaver of grand stories with an infectious laugh. He made it difficult to not immediately become his friend. His faith in God was strong and is to be celebrated.
Mike is survived by his wife, children, Black Lab Dox, siblings Debra Nugent Stickly, Mark (Kim Rae), David, Daniel (Marypat) and Martha (Scott) Shaw. He is further survived by mother-in-law Mary, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, including close friends Mark Belford and Linda Twiss. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary, father-in-law Robert, Buff, Blue, Coater, Rex, DU, Molly, Katie, Arrow, Toby, Rambo
and Jada.
The family appreciates and gives thanks to all those who have expressed their condolences and offered prayer. A mass of Christian faith will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 150 Brian Berg Dr,
Brevard, NC 28712.
