Michael Joseph O’Brien


On Thursday, February 20, 2025, Michael J. O’Brien, age 53, passed away following a courageous battle with ALS, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family.


Michael Joseph O'Brien, affectionately known as Mike, Big Mike, or simply O'B, was born on March 28, 1971. Mike was raised in Palmer, Massachusetts, by his parents John (Jack) and Margaret (Peg) O’Brien with values that shaped the remarkable man he became. His siblings, Kerry O’Brien and husband Stu Skaza, Eileen Stuyniski, and husband Dave Stuyniski, and Dan O’Brien and husband Jon Halbur, will fondly remember their brother’s humor and kindness.


Mike was the beloved husband of Juliet (Lawrence) O’Brien for nearly 30 years, creating a life full of love, and cherished memories with their 3 children: Connor, Sean, and Michaela O’Brien. They are proud to carry forth his spirit of compassion, love of life, and sense of humor.


Michael was also a cherished uncle to Maggie Skaza, Paige and Regan Stuyniski, and Ben, Zach, and Josh Lawrence. He was loved like a son by his in-laws, Donald (Jeff) and Rose Lawrence, and like a brother by Scott and Meghan Lawrence. Michael's extended family, including his aunts, uncles, and cousins will miss his fun-loving spirit.


Michael was a dedicated family man, a loyal friend, and an active participant in his community. Michael served on the Westminster Parks and Recreation Committee, coached youth soccer, baseball and basketball, and was a member of Saint Edward the Confessor Parish. His passion for sports was evident not only in his active involvement in coaching but also in his hobbies which included golf, baseball, softball (PACC), and watching sports. As an athlete, he was proud to be inducted into Palmer High School’s Hall of Fame with his 1989 varsity baseball team. Michael's competitive spirit was also displayed while playing cards (Poker, Scat, UNO and Oh Pshaw) with friends and family. He always said that he hated to lose more than he loved to win.


Michael was a respected figure in his professional field, working for various companies in roles that showcased his sales skills and warm personality. He spent five years working at Amoskeag Beverages in Hooksett, New Hampshire after graduating from Saint Anselm College in 1993. Michael then worked for 20 years as a Senior Sales Representative for Lemay Associates and later as a Territory Manager for Keen Utility, demonstrating his commitment and dedication to his work.


Michael's resilience was witnessed in his courageous battle with ALS. His spirit remained undaunted, his humor intact, and his love for his family and friends unwavering. His journey was a testament to his strength and a source of inspiration for those around him.


Throughout his life, Michael made everyone he met feel cherished and valued. As Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of courage, compassion, and humor will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.


Family and friends are invited to the calling hours on Friday, February 28, 2025, at

4:00 - 7:00 pm at the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, 01420.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11:00 am at Saint Edward the Confessor, 10 Church Street, Westminster, Massachusetts, 01473. Everyone is asked to go directly to the Church.
