Michael S. O'Connell was born on October 11,1952, in Jackson, Michigan. On Friday, January 26, 2024, he peacefully exited this world at the age of 71, due to complications of Leukodystrophy.
Michael leaves behind his adoring family, which includes his wife of 50 years, Pamela; daughter, Kristy Dickinson (Shawn), daughter Tracy VanWoert (Shannon Simons); grandchildren, Makenna, Kaden, Raegan, Lynkin and special four-legged buddy, Toby. Also surviving are his sisters, Linda Weber and Sue Balyeat. Michael will be reunited in heaven with his parents, Charles and Joyce O'Connell, in-laws Edward and Evelynn Hatfield, and brothers in law, Rick Weber and Donnie Balyeat.
Michael was a 1970 graduate of Jackson High School and furthered his education at Jackson Community College before being hired at Consumers Power. He was a driven and dedicated employee of Consumers for 42 years before retiring in 2012. His work ethic and knowledge in the field of Substation Design is still discussed and admired throughout the company today. Michael also worked many summers at Michigan International Speedway as a security guard. This was hardly work though, as he was an avid NASCAR fan and lived for the wave of the checkered flag.
Michael had many interests and hobbies that he was passionate about. These included a love for all Detroit sports, being a Mason, having a meticulous lawn and landscape, classic cars, and being active. He created many memories for his family with annual trips to Cedar Point as well as many camping trips around the state. He also loved his weekly breakfast at Steve's Ranch where he enjoyed time spent around the table talking with his fellow retiree friends. While later in his life Michael's body began to fail him, he never gave up and showed strength and determination right up until his very last breath. He will be remembered as an honest and loving family man and will be missed dearly by all that loved him.
To honor Michael's life, the family will hold a viewing at the Hampton Funeral Home in Jackson, on Tuesday, January, 30th from 4-7pm. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 31st at 11:00. Interment to follow at Roseland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Henry Ford Hospice.

Mike surely was in the right profession because of his attention to detail and excellence in design. He was instrumental in the constant improvement of the design process for Bulk Power Substations his entire career and was always one step ahead in the computerized transition in design. Mike was always a true gentleman who was respected by everyone, peers and staff alike, not for just design but as a person. He led by example and will be sorely missed by his friends and family both current and past. I am proud to have known Mike and worked in the same department for most of my career.
