Michael O'Hara Obituary

Published by Legacy on May 24, 2025.
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Coach, and Friend
Michael J. O'Hara Jr., a devoted family man and lifelong sports enthusiast, passed away May 23rd surrounded by those who loved him. He was 72 years old.
Michael lived life on his own terms, with humor, and a passion for the things-and people-he loved most. From his early days as a player, to his years spent umpiring baseball games, and eventually to his greatest joy, coaching basketball. He dedicated countless hours mentoring young athletes, from grammar school gyms to high school courts, shaping not only their skills but their character.
He found joy in the simple things-spending time in Atlantic City, vacationing along the Jersey Shore, soaking in the sun and serenity of Aruba with his beloved wife by his side. Whether it was watching his grandchildren compete in sports or sitting them down to share stories of the past.
A man of routine and hope, he rarely missed a day playing the lottery, and when he won-even a little-he was quick to share it with his family, just one of the many ways he showed his generosity and love.
Michael will be remembered for his strong spirit, his deep loyalty, and the way numbers just made sense to him. His legacy lives on in the players he coached, the family he cherished, and the many lives he touched along the way.
He is survived by his loving wife Hope (Counterman) O'Hara, his children Patricia Kaschak (spouse Don Kaschak), Colleen Kurdyla (spouse Jason Kurdyla), his grandchildren Reily, Brody, Logan and Dylan, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A celebration of Michael's life will be held on Thursday June 5th 10:30am at St. James R.C. Church, Woodbridge. Funeral services under the direction of the Gustav J. Novak Funeral Home 419 Barclay St., Perth Amboy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to JFK Athletic Department in Michael's memory.

Your heart soon will be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Mike was a great teacher at the stuff he loved to do. If you asked Mike the right way for help, he was one to lend a hand. I will always remember the times working together.
