I was so sorry to hear about the passing of my dear friend Mike.
I first met Mike in 1975. He was 32 years old and I was 21. We were very close friends ever since. We didn't get to see each other nearly enough. We always lived 4-5 hours apart. But no matter how much time passed between our visits we'd pick up right where we left off. He was one of a handful of people at our small, private wedding.
Mike was a rare gem of a human being in more ways than one. That's often said about loved ones when they leave us in this world, but in Mike's case it is objectively true. He wasn't a "camp" thinker. He had a truly independent mind that allowed him to find the good in people, places and ideas that would seem incompatible to most. He could eloquently, and often humorously, share his observations and thoughts. I'm certain there are more dirigible pilots in this world than there are men who, after working on a hot roof all day, would ride their bicycle to a Japanese garden and meditate on the frogs in a pond.
I remember Mike's little girls and would often see Jennifer while visiting Mike, watching her become a beautiful young woman over the years. I don't think I ever saw or talked with Mike without him mentioning Jennifer.
Mike was a loyal father and friend. My heart aches at the loss of my dear philosopher, scholar, roofer, comedian friend. I will miss him tremendously.

I'm John Gregory, Mike's friend from England. I first met Mike in 1992 when i was just passing through Washington on my way elsewhere. But i was drawn to his character and kindness and really i kept in touch with him from that point onwards. I would fly out to DC regularly in the period between first meeting him and around 2010 just to spend time with Mike and his daughter Jennifer. These were good times for me in great company and i can definitely endorse the previous description of Mike as a great story teller. Also an articulate man and a true gentleman. I always told him he could have made a good living as a DC tour guide as he knew all the history and layout of the city as well as the great events and scandals and he possessed the requisite genuine charm and presentational skills but of course he was happy to just relate all of his stories and anecdotes to his friends. In more recent times i stopped visiting the US but always kept in touch with Mike and Jennifer and I'll always cherish the visits and shared car and plane journeys and meals out.
I was honoured to be his friend and I'm so sad at his passing and my heart goes out to Jennifer and all the rest of his loved ones.
Rest in peace Mike.
You were an extraordinary and special man.
