Parks Brothers Funeral Service - Prague ChapelMichael Wayne “Mike” Opela, of Choctaw, Oklahoma, passed away on March 14, 2026, at the age of 62. He was born on September 21, 1963, to Wayne Opela and Wilma (McCrackin) Clevenger.
Mike was raised in Prague and was a proud graduate of Prague High School, Class of 1981. Shortly after, in 1984, he began what would become a long and distinguished career at Tinker Air Force Base as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic. Through dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, Mike steadily advanced in his field. In 2000, he was promoted to Aircraft Engine MRO Supervisor, followed by his appointment in 2010 as Squadron Director of the Propulsion Maintenance Group Squadron, where he played a vital role in overseeing work on numerous aircraft. In 2021, he achieved the position of Lead Program Management Specialist. Mike retired in 2022 after nearly four decades of service, but his passion for his work continued as he remained active as a consultant contractor with Tinker.
A firm believer in personal and professional growth, Mike furthered his education while working full time. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Leadership from Southern Nazarene University in 2003 and later obtained his Master’s Degree in Aerospace Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 2005.
Mike was widely known for his strong work ethic—often described as the true “Opela” way. Even outside of his professional career, he rarely slowed down. He found fulfillment in helping others, frequently taking on odd jobs for neighbors and caring for the lawns of many older residents in his community. His willingness to lend a hand and his steady presence made a lasting impact on those around him.
In his free time, Mike found great joy in the outdoors. He especially loved spending time at his lake house at Lake Eufaula, where he enjoyed working, relaxing, and making memories with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne Opela and Wilma Clevenger; and two brothers, Doyle Opela and Dexter Opela.
Those left to cherish his memory include his uncles, George Opela of Prague and Jerry Opela and his wife, Nancy, of Prague; his aunt, Velma Opela of Fayetteville, Arkansas; his nephews, Chad Opela and his wife, Nicole, of Holden, Missouri, and Colton Opela of Galena, Kansas; his niece, Krista Hulsey and her husband, Michael, of Hockley, Texas; his close friends, Shelli Barnett and Phyllis Sedlacek; many cousins and other dear friends.
