Michael F. Ortmann

Michael F. Ortmann, 70, of Roeland Park, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025. He was born on September 16, 1955 in Augusta, Kansas to Fred and Betty Ortmann.

Michael was born and raised in Augusta, Kansas. After graduating from Augusta High School, he attended Kansas State University graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and years later completed his Master’s Degree at Wichita State University.

He was a dedicated public high school teacher for nearly four decades in the state of Kansas. He taught history in the Newton, Derby, Lawrence, and Blue Valley school districts. He is well known for his eccentric and enthusiastic teaching methods who was adored by his students and admired by his fellow teachers throughout the course of his career.

His hobbies included extensive traveling, which included overseas destinations such as Europe, Russia and China and numerous domestic trips to New York and the Washington, DC areas to visit his grand nieces and spend time at his favorite location at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Michael loved antiques and had a passion for Turner Classic Movies and Broadway Shows.

Michael is survived by his two nephews, Christopher (Balinda) McCallum and David (Victoria) McCallum, his grand nephew, Keilan McCallum, grand nieces, Kendall Grady and Reagan McCallum, and brother-in-law, Roderick McCallum.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Betty Ortmann, and sister, Cheryl McCallum.

A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00pm on Friday, November 28, 2025, at Penwell Gabel's Olathe Chapel, with a reception following until 5:30pm.
