Michael Sutton Peter, 60, of Swanzey, NH., died suddenly in his home on Monday, February 12, 2024.
He was born on July 23, 1963, to Judith Anne (Regan) Peter and Ernest Norman Peter in Manhattan, New York. He was educated at Monadnock Regional High School, graduating in 1981.
Michael, who lived with schizophrenia most of his life, found joy in his friends, his family, nice clothes and rock music. After graduating from high school Michael spent time hitchhiking around the country, surviving on odd jobs. He settled back in Keene, not far from his parents in Gilsum, and developed a rotating circle of friends who supported him even as he worked to support them, generous to a fault, even when he himself was struggling to make ends meet. He was particularly dedicated to caring for his friend Charlie, who died earlier this decade, and his friend, Ann Cronk, who was with Michael when he died. Michael worked diligently to stay in touch with his siblings, calling frequently, often just to say hello in his deep, often jocular voice. Or to talk about the silk shirt or new piece of stereo equipment he had just got a good deal on. His family will miss the sound of his voice at the other end of the phone.
Mr. Peter is survived by his brother Marc Peter of Denver, Colorado and wife Ann and sons Alec and Graham, his sister Gretchen Peter of Ketchum, Idaho and her husband Joel Mallett and their children Harper and Ellis Mallett and his sister Jennifer Peter of Boston, Massachusetts and her husband Andrew Ryan and their children Clara and Cormac Ryan. Michael was predeceased by his parents.
Services for Michael will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Monadnock Family Services or Community Crossroads, which provided so much support to Michael and his family, or call a loved one just to say hello, in memory of Michael.
Services are under the care of Cheshire Family Funeral Home and Crematories, 46 South Winchester St. West Swanzey, NH. 03469. www.cheshirefamilyfh.com.
