Michael Wayne Powell passed away at his home surrounded by love on January 16th, 2026.
Michael was born July 16th, 1969 in Washington, Indiana to his loving mother, Ann Letitia (Putnam) Powell and father, Samuel W. Powell. He was preceded in death by his mother.
“Mike” started his employment as a teenager at the former Sheraton Hotel in French Lick, Indiana in the maintenance department. He always believed in hard work, learning something new, and giving all that he had. Throughout his lifetime, he acquired experience in concrete work, various construction trades, and truck driving. His most recent and favorite employer of all time was Weddle Bros. Construction out of Evansville, Indiana. A great big thank you to them! They were an excellent employer and many friendships were made there.
Mike had many talents and could pretty much fix anything that was broken as well as solve any puzzle, and laugh at you when you couldn’t. He loved the outdoors whether fishing, mushroom hunting, target shooting, or his all-time favorite – sitting by a fire in his yard chatting with close family and friends. He had a tight circle and chose those that he trusted to be in it, and made them his family.
Mike leaves behind four beautiful children, five perfect grandchildren and numerous close friends.
He was always a dependable and caring “Daddy”, “Dad”, and “Old Man”, to Michael’an Cook (Evan), daughter who resides in French Lick, daughter Darian Sanders (Jon) who resides in French Lick, Daughter Kyla Basham (Franklin) residing in Memphis, Indiana, and Son Brayden Powell, aka “Boy”, currently residing in Henryville, Indiana.
Five grandchildren, who were the loves of his life, Maddox, Lainey, Aria, Asher, and Elsie.
He also leaves faithful friend and co-parent of 34 years, April Bennett of Sellersburg, Indiana.
Beloved sister, Marianne Lemastus of Louisville, Kentucky, nephews, Tim and Greg Lemastus and niece, Stacey Carter all of Louisville, Kentucky.
Brother and best friend, Corey (Bridget) Padgett, and nephew, Tate aka “Jr.” who resides in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Best friends and cousins, Gary Wininger, Jeanie Townsend, Chris (Dianna) Land, Doug Jones all of French Lick, Indiana and Tony Anderson of Ferdinand, Indiana.
An invitation only Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
