Michael Steven Runels, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 70 in
Pensacola, FL, due to complications from cancer. He was surrounded by the love of his life, his devoted wife of 47 years, Vija Runels, as he entered eternal rest.
Born in Lagrange, GA, Mike was the son of Aaron Runels and Runnel Runels Reid. He graduated from Troup High School and later attended Troup Technical College, where he earned a certification in welding. A lifelong learner, Mike went on to obtain degrees in mathematics and divinity, reflecting his diverse passions and sharp intellect.
On July 11, 1978, Mike married Vija Teague at the Lagrange City Courthouse, beginning a love story that spanned over 52 years. Vija was his one true love, and he dedicated himself to her happiness. Together, they raised two sons: Michael Jr., 45, and Christopher Sr., 42. Mike was a proud grandfather to McKayla, 23; Michael II, 20; Christopher Jr., 9; and step-grandchildren Kyler, 22, and Avery, 19, whom he cherished as his own. His legacy continued through three great-grandchildren: Ragnar, 5; Bobbi-Jo, 3; and Malachi, 1. He was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Caroline. In the biblical sense, Mike's life bore fruit that will endure for generations.
Mike's career was marked by dedication and variety. He worked in multiple positions at South Wire, where he spent much of his adult working life. Later, he took on roles at Mike Bell Chevrolet and Pugmire Ford, before transitioning to become a long-haul trucker, a job that ultimately concluded his professional journey.
A man of simple joys, Mike loved fishing with his family, driving around with Vija and their children to admire houses, cars, dogs, and boats, and tackling projects like painting or building fences. His dogs, his "fur babies," brought him boundless happiness.
Faith was the cornerstone of Mike's life. He found his spiritual home at The Point Baptist Church in Perdido Key, FL, a community that embraced him with love and challenged his deep biblical knowledge. Mike relished studying and debating scripture with his brothers in Christ, especially on topics like the rapture, which often sparked lively discussions. His faith in Jesus Christ was unwavering, and he treasured his time growing closer to his Lord.
Mike is survived by his wife, Vija; sons, Michael Jr. and Christopher Sr.; grandchildren, McKayla, Kyler, Michael II, Avery, and Christopher Jr.; great-grandchildren, Ragnar, Bobbi-Jo, and Malachi; siblings, Nancy, Elizabeth, and Randy; sisters-in-law, Marie and Pat; daughter-in-law, Angie; and grandson-in-law, Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Runnel; brothers, Donnie and Larry; and granddaughter, Caroline.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at The Point Church in Perdido Key, FL. Pastor Kyle Valaer will preach, with Pastor Joe leading praise. Light refreshments will follow in DuBois Hall with family and church members. The service will be streamed on Facebook and YouTube for out-of-state loved ones. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Florida Baptist Children's Home.
Mike's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
