Michael is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Clementine (Tina); two daughters, Kierlon Branche (Anthony) and Lisa Smego (Michael); stepson, Neil Hamilton; two brothers, Doug Sandberg (Anna) and Jim Sandberg (Peggy); three grandchildren, Tyler Sandberg, Justin Branche and Breanne Smego; two great-grandchildren; one aunt, Myrt Hughbanks; one niece, Laura Griswold; four nephews, August Sandberg, James Sandberg, Matt Sandberg and Nick Sandberg and a host of great nieces, great nephews and extended family.
Michael was born in Scottsbluff, NE on September 24, 1946, graduated from Wheat Ridge High School, and attended the University of Nebraska. He served his country honorably while in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and further as a Department of Defense civilian.
Michael was an avid sportsman, an outstanding athlete. He played football and ran track & field in his youth. Basketball was his biggest love, playing for the Milwaukee Bucks (2 years) and continued well into his late 50's. He was a bowler, and an avid golfer who became a master of the game. He will be remembered by his many "Buds" and comrades as a friend, mentor and a true competitor.
Michael prided himself on being a good husband, father and grandfather, valuing his relationships with family and friends. He was a kind and generous man to the world and wanted so little for himself.
