Michael Sherman Sargent, 79, went to meet Jesus on Friday, December 5, 2025, in Austin, Texas, after a battle with dementia. He was born November 6, 1946, in Thermopolis, Wyoming, to Manfred and Bessie Sargent, but was raised in Texas, where he spent most of his life.
Known as Mike to friends and family, he attended Irving High School, where he excelled in football and met the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Box. Mike continued his football career at Kilgore Junior College, earning multiple honors and helping lead the team to the 1966 Junior College National Championship and was inducted into the Kilgore Junior College Hall of Fame in 2014.
Mike spent over 35 years with Humble Oil/ExxonMobil, holding numerous positions across Texas. He was widely respected for his strong work ethic and dedication, retiring in 2006. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mike showed his love by faithfully providing for his family. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, traveling, classic country music, and attending his grandchildren's sports and dance events.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Cecil and Helen Box; sister-in-law Debbie Box; and longtime friend, Tanya Pierce Toney. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pat; his children, Patti Sargent-Neely (John) and Kyle Sargent (Amanda); his grandchildren Courtney Worrell Merchant (Donald), Landry Neely (Ashley), Shane Neely, and Addison and Aaron Sargent; three great-grandchildren, Madison, McKenzie, and Macie Merchant; his sisters, Clellene Gammill (Ben) and Kay Fulbright (Darryl); his brother-in-law Mike Box (Susan); and many extended family members and dear friends.
A private family service will be held December 18, 2025, with a Celebration of Life to be announced. The family is grateful for the love, prayers, and compassionate care shown to Mike and Pat over the years.
