Michael Boyd Sheffield passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, at the age of 80. He was born in Brigham City, Utah, the fourth of five children to Boyd Malmrose Sheffield and Norma Wood Sheffield.
On December 30, 1972, he married the love of his life, Susan Irene Klem Sheffield. Together, they raised two sons, Matthew Boyd Sheffield and Peter Joseph Sheffield.
Michael was a proud grandfather to Chloe Irene Sheffield, Cameron Joseph Chambless, Maddie Miranda, Noah Joseph Sheffield, and Luella Cota, and he was blessed with four great-grandchildren.
He attended school and Brigham Young University and earned his bachelor's degree from San Diego State University and a master's degree in Special Education from National University. Teaching was his true calling-he taught for 20 years in San Diego, specializing in P.E. and special education. He was beloved by his students. After retiring from full-time teaching, he continued to impact young lives by substituting in School District's in the Salt Lake City area for another 10 years. He also owned and operated his own window covering installation business for a decade.
Michael was an active member and High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a two-year mission in Ireland, was sealed in the Los Angeles Temple, and served for five years as an ordinance worker in the San Diego Temple. He was also deeply involved in service, including over 23 years in 12-step and RCA couples fellowships.
He grew up in Brigham City, Utah, attended college at Brigham Young University and in San Diego. He lived in West Valley and San Diego before retiring in Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill, and his sister Sandra. He is survived by his sisters Shauna Sheffield Walton and Jeanie Sheffield Peck.
Michael was a referee for city league softball and basketball and had a passion for sports. He loved watching games on TV or in person, playing basketball and tennis, and enjoying card games with family. His signature always included a smiley face. His love of wearing Hawaiian shirts will be missed.
Above all, Michael loved his family deeply and was known for his kindness, quiet strength, and genuine joy in spending time with his loved ones. His legacy of love, service, and faith will live on in all who knew him.
There will be a celebration of life held in his honor, Saturday, July 26, 2025 at The Beckstead Apartment complex clubhouse, 1844 West South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan UT from 5:00-7:00 pm.
Arrangements are under the direction of Jenkins-Soffe funeral home in South Jordan Utah.
