Newcomer Funeral Home - AkronMichael Howard Simmons, 64, of Canal Fulton, passed away on November 3, 2025 at his residence. He was born in Akron, OH on July 14, 1961 and grew up in Green, graduating from Green High School in 1979. Mike spent the majority of his career as a sales manager for Rent- A-Center before buying General Ionics Water Systems. His most recent position was as a sales manager and team leader for IGS Energy.
In his free time, Mike loved outdoor motor sports. He and his son Bob spent countless hours working on dirt bikes and ATVs as well as boating at the Portage Lakes. He always looked forward to family dinners and gatherings at his daughter Allison's home. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he never missed an opportunity to brag about them. He was always in the stands blowing his air horn at their sporting events or catching up on their lives during conversations in the garage.
Music was Mike's passion. He was an accomplished musician since high school when he was a drummer in the band Agent. He was proficient with several instruments and composed original songs as well. He recently began recording his work which he shared on Youtube under "Dude Positive". After his cancer diagnosis, Mike wanted to lift himself and others up with a positive message and he reached so many with his music. His song "Keep On Going" was publicized by University Hospitals as a message of hope for those who struggle with illness.
Mike was a longtime member of Faith Family Church in North Canton where he served in the music department running sound systems.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and his legacy will live on through his family and friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Howard "Buck" Simmons.
Mike will be deeply missed by his mother, Carolyn "Lyn" Six; children, Robert (Valerie) Simmons and Allison (Clint) Helmick; wife, Jackie; siblings, John (Danielle) Simmons, Ty Simmons, Cindy (Angelo), and Jeremy Simmons; grandchildren, David Simmons, Colton Helmick, and Evelyn Helmick; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Mike also leaves his beloved dog and constant companion, Leo.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025 from 2-4 pm immediately followed by a 4:00 pm memorial service at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd., Akron.
