Michael V. Smith, 83, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born in Missoula, Montana, on August 12, 1942, to George and Marsha (Filich) Smith, Michael lived a life grounded in authenticity, curiosity, and heart.

He shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Karen (Prins) Smith, the love of his life. Together, they enjoyed countless adventures - whether traveling, driving the open road, or simply taking a quiet walk hand in hand.

Those who knew Michael often describe him with the simple phrase, "what you see is what you get." He lived with honesty and presence, guided by what he called a sense of common-sense spirituality. He never sought to be placed on a pedestal and would be the first to remind others that he was, above all, just human - sometimes "mad, glad, and sad," as he'd say - but always fully himself.

Michael's genuine spirit, thoughtful outlook on life, and deep love for those around him will be lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.

Survivors include his loving wife of many years, Karen (Prins) Smith; daughters Loretta (Patrick) Henry and Sandra (Jeffrey) Chrispell; many granddaughters and great grandchildren along with many lifelong friends, he will be missed by all the knew and loved him.

The family invites friends to take a quiet walk, share a kind word, or simply pause to appreciate the small, meaningful moments in the world - just as Michael so often did.

Services: A time of visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 PM with a memorial service to immediately follow at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
