Michael Smoot Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Elmhurst Community Funeral Home - The Ahlgrim Chapel on Jan. 6, 2026.
Michael L. Smoot, who was born in Carbondale, Illinois on February 16, 1943, died peacefully on January 3, 2026, with his beloved wife at his side. He left behind a legacy of service, intellect, humor, and deep devotion to his family.
Michael dedicated more than 37 years of his life to public education in Illinois, shaping schools, supporting teachers, and improving the lives of countless students. He began his career as a classroom teacher and steadily rose through roles as a principal and administrator before serving with distinction as Superintendent of Schools for Wood Dale School District #7 for 25 years. His leadership was marked by integrity, thoughtful strategy, and a deep belief in the potential of every child.
Following his retirement, Michael received recognition from the Illinois House of Representatives for his exemplary contributions to education, a testament to the esteem he garnered during his career and within the community.
Outside of work, Michael embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He loved the American West and found great joy snow skiing and fly fishing in Idaho and Wyoming, places that offered him both adventure and peace. A gourmet chef, Michael expressed his love through cooking. He took great pride in preparing memorable meals for his family, creating lasting traditions around the table.
Michael was known as a fun and funny presence-someone people genuinely enjoyed being around. He possessed a keen intellect and approached all challenges with strategic insight. His enduring enthusiasm for thoroughbred horse racing reflected his admiration for discipline, high performance, and thoughtful analysis.
Above all, Michael was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, whose life was defined by his deep commitment to family. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Smoot, and by his parents Juanita Smoot Corder and Lawrence Corder, who lovingly raised him and shaped the man he became. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Smoot, his steadfast partner in life, who cared for him with unwavering devotion during his final three years at Park Place of Elmhurst and remained at his side until his passing. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Smoot; his sons, Sean Smoot and Chris Smoot; and his beloved grandchildren, Emily, Colter, and Cooper, who brought him immense pride, joy, and purpose.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives are better because of his work and the warmth of his spirit.
A service to celebrate Michael's life will be held at a later date.
