On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, Michael Katsuyoshi Takaki passed away in the loving arms of his wife and four children at the age of 97.
Mike was born to Zentaro and Satoyo (Morioka) Takaki on January 31, 1919 and was raised in North Kohala, Hawaii. Growing up, he fished, skin dived and was an all-around athlete and boxing champion. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and after leaving the islands for Chicago, Illinois, to attend school, earned his bachelors degree in electrical engineering. When he returned home to Hawaii to teach/coach at Kohala High School and help out at the Takaki family Store in Niulii, he met his one and only love; Kikue.
Upon a marriage that would last almost 64 years, the adventurous couple moved to Chicago. Mike owned and operated his own business, pioneering in television electronics sales and service while Kikue continued her teaching career. An ingenious problem solver, if he couldn't fix a television through standard means, he would actually make the parts and systems to get it working, often unbeknownst to his customers. Mike's big heart showed up in many ways, when his customers had difficulty paying for his services - he would work with them, through bartering and would come home with some of the most unusual items!
He loved traveling, camping, golfing, vegetable gardening, "talking story" and playing the Hawaiian steel guitar and ukulele. Family time was filled with summer road trips to world fairs, national parks, fishing in Wisconsin and home improvement projects. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix or make. There wasn't any sporting event he didn't love to watch. He was a man of few words, but had a large presence and acted out of kindness and generosity his whole life. Mike was a healer, who was taught Reiki when the Japanese Master Dr. Chujiro Hayashi visited his parent's home in Hawaii and gifted him with this ancient hands-on healing energy. Many people benefitted from his exceptionally strong Ki.
Mike was a long time resident of Park Forest, Illinois, and in later years, Cape Coral, Florida and Woodinville, Washington. He enjoyed an active retirement, cooking, baking, oil painting, making furniture, gardening, and woodworking. He specialized in creating wooden "honu" - sea turtles - which he often gave to friends and loved ones, or complete strangers to make their day brighter. This passion for honu was fitting, as in Hawaiian and Japanese culture, the turtle is symbolic of long life.
Mike is survived by his wife, Kikue, his four children; Lynn Takaki (Gene Gerrard), Lisa Takaki ( Ken Ramirez), Mike Takaki and Lani Takaki, four grandchildren; Niko, Kiana, Kala and Quinten, sister, Margaret (Raymond) Ohara and dearly loved extended family originating from Hawaii. He was an inspiration to all of us in enjoying each day through the simple things; the beauty of nature, preparation and enjoyment of a good meal, never complaining and always finding a way through inner strength. Aloha...until we meet again.
A private celebration of Mike's life will be held. In lieu of flowers, please donate or purchase a koa tree to restore a koa forest through The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative.

I met Mr. Takaki as a boyhood friend of his Son, Mike, in 1972. I remember being immensely impressed by both his ability to fix electronics and that he fixed us both lunch as well!

My thoughts and prayers are with the Takaki family. I never had the opportunity to have met Mr. Takaki but I will always cherish the turtles that he made. He was very good at that and his daughter Lani was very generous to have shared one of the many turtles he made. He will be greatly missed.

A favorite memory of Mike was on a camping trip in Yosemite National Park when he and Kikues' kids and our kids were little. Our campsite was near a fair sized mountain stream lined with willows and trees. One evening about dark we were suddenly aware that little Mikey (about 3 yrs old) was missing. Panic struck! An immediate search proved fruitless. Without hesitation Mike jumped into the creek and began searching the eddys, riffles, and overreaching willows. He didn't exit the creek until a while later when Kikue returned with little Mikey in tow. Mikey had wandered off and was being entertained around a neighboring campfire. Of course we were all extremely relieved - but Mike was soaking wet.
I have lots of fond memories of my brother-in-law, Mike. Though we lived a few thousand miles apart, yet I was privileged to enjoy many happy occasions with Mike and his family It was always a pleasure. He was always thoughtful and considerate, always sharing his talents and interesting stories, always a gentleman, always there and supportive of Kise family events. I will miss him, and thank his great family for many memories, esp. that great trip to Okinawa

I was fortunate to have the opportunity for Mike to be a part of my life when Lynn joined our family. He was usually rather quiet, but it was easy to tell that his gentle demeanor and kind spirit were going to be quite an addition, also. In the years that followed, I so enjoyed and loved the times that we shared together. Mike was a pure joy to be around - always so easygoing with an incredible and sometimes surprising sense of humor. I will surely miss this man for he showed me how to enjoy so many things - especially our trip to Hawaii.

Mike Takaki is an inspiration. He lived his whole adult life devoted to his family. The Takakis are so close knit and have so many memories to share.

I am the proud owner of turtles from the Turtle Factory. Turtles are very special to me, and when Lynn told her dad I loved honu, he promptly and generously gave me three. They are on display in my living room on a turtle platter that was a gift from my sister. I'm privileged to know the wonderful and generous Takaki family, and this special family is a testament to the type of husband and father Mike was.

Mr. Takaki inspired me to learn to play the Ukulele when he was 96 years old! I couldn't believe how he could move his fingers on both the Uke and the steel guitar. I loved his stories about his past, Hawaii, skin diving, fishing, teaching the kids to swim, and even driving the school bus. Mr. Takaki loved his daughter, Lani, so much that he called my house when I was about 8 years old, after I tripped Lani walking home from school. Needless to say, my mom wasn't happy! So where at first I almost feared him as a boy, I came to know him as a man, and found him to be a gentle spirit, a kind and loving man, loyal, and diligent in his efforts. I am blessed to have a few turtles around my house that he made. Sometimes a turtle will move on its own that I cannot explain when I find it pointing a different direction, or in an entirely different place. These turtles will keep his legacy alive in my heart. Aloha, Mr. Takaki, may your spirit find its home, and may your family be blessed with health, happiness and longevity.
