Michael Tate Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Overton Funeral Home - Indianola on Dec. 24, 2025.
Michael Martin Tate was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on April 14, 1961 to Dr. Charles and Patricia (Pafford) Tate. He died on December 24, 2025, at the age of 64, after a courageous battle with cancer. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Karrie, and two daughters Madeleine (Joseph) Foley and AnneMarie (Eoin) Tate Davis. Michael is also survived by his mother Patricia Tate Almond, his sister Jennifer Tate-Murphy, step-brother David Almond, and his dear aunt Ann Tate Hall. He was preceded in death by his father Dr. Charles Tate, uncle Robert Hall and his step-father David Almond.

Michael graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1983. He began his career in the Pennsylvania State Horse Racing Commission Laboratory by testing animals for toxicological malformations. While working full-time, he also achieved a second degree in Forensic and Toxicological Chemistry from West Chester University, PA in 1989. It was here at West Chester that he met and consequentially married the love of his life, Karrie. Mike always said she made him a better student because she religiously studied. He did drag her away from her books occasionally to share delicious orders of the world-renown Kennett Square batter-dipped mushrooms and debate science fiction.

Michael, however, wanted to work specifically in a crime lab and sent out dozens of resumes. Two states responded immediately-Montana and Iowa. He figuratively flipped a coin and thus began his meritorious tenure as a Criminalist at the Division of Criminal Investigation Laboratory in Iowa in the fall of 1989. After thirty-six years and many commendations, he retired-only to go back on a part-time basis for several more months. During his tenure, Michael worked in Drug Toxicology, in the Alcohol Division, and eventually landed in the Firearms and Tool Marks Section where he then retired as the Head Firearms Examiner for the state of Iowa. He was on the executive board of International Association for Chemical Testing (IACT) as well as a member-in-standing in the Association of Firearm and Tool Mark Examiners (AFTE). He was also awarded several commendations from the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau for his work in DUI test upgrading and reporting.

A private person, Mike preferred solitary activities like hunting and shooting and working on the ancient Tate Fleet of automobiles-including Karrie's three-decade-old red Volvo. He enjoyed auctions and bargains, and his stalwart canine companion, Piper the Beagle.

However, nothing gave Michael more pride and joy than "his girls"-offering many hours of coaching sports, teaching basic skills in mechanics and guiding them in matters self-defense. Michael mentored them through example what an invested husband and father looked like, and he was both delighted and rewarded by their choice of exceptional husbands. As he is officially an owner of one square foot of land in Scotland (thus titled by statute), Lord Michael Tate was blessed to walk his beautiful ladies-the pinnacles of his heart's joy-down their wedding aisles in his full Scottish regalia.

Michael was an honest man, full of integrity and principle, and his life touched more people than he will ever know. He will be forever missed, especially by Karrie, Maddie and Joe, and Annie and Eoin, and also by the multitudes of people whose lives were bettered because of his dedication to keeping Iowa (and perhaps, in some small way, the world) a little bit safer.

In honor of Mike's life work, please consider supporting any and all law-enforcement personnel and their agencies. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a future date.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. He was such a sweet, gentle hardworking friend. I looked forward to seeing him and catching up at our annual AFTE Conference each year. He was one of my NFEA classmates, and we had many good memories during our time in the Academy.

I had the privilege to know Michael when he was a student in the ATF National Firearms Examiner Academy. He was always thoughtful and shared stories of his "girls" when we met up at training conferences. Heaven has another bright angel to watch over us.
