Michael Skelton Thompson, 75, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away surrounded by family on Thursday, October 9th, 2025, at Mosaic Medical Center, Maryville, Missouri. Born on Sunday, October 23rd, 1949, in Maryville, to Phillip Eugene and Wilma Lenore (Skelton) Thompson, Michael lived a life dedicated to service, family, and community.

After graduating from Maryville High School, Michael had a unique chapter in his life as a shrimp boat captain, first in Tampa, FL, and then in Astoria, OR.

He was a proud veteran and served two tours in Vietnam with the United States Navy aboard the USS Enterprise, USS Constellation, and the USS Providence. His commitment to service extended beyond his military career, as he was an active member of the Masons, and the Past Worshipful Master of Nodaway Lodge #470 AF and AM, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the American Legion Post 100 in Maryville, MO.

Michael's educational journey led him to Northwest Missouri State University, where he received his B.S., degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice in 1992. He furthered his education with a master’s in social work from the University of Missouri, Columbia. His career as a social worker and therapist was marked by compassion and dedication, serving the community through his work with Hospice in Maryville, Missouri, and as a substance abuse counselor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Sue Thomas.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Vicki Thompson, of the home, they were married at Laura Street Baptist Church in 1989, and their three children: Robin Porter, Reggae Thompson, and Dylan Thompson, all of Maryville, MO. He was a cherished grandfather to Jamie G. Ledbetter, Nicholas T. Porter, and Charlie Bornman, and a proud great-grandfather to Vivian Thomas and Kinnley Porter. Michael is also survived by his brother, Phillip Pat Thompson, of Des Moines, IA.

Michael's life will be celebrated and remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his country. He was the former Mayor of Maryville, he was involved with jail ministry, drug court, a substance abuse counselor, worked with hospice, and was a proud and prominent 39-year member of AA. His legacy of kindness, strength, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Mike Celebration of Life Service will be at 2:00 PM, on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church, Maryville, Missouri. Masonic Services will be at the conclusion of the service at the church. Full military rites will be performed at the end of the service.
