Tomich, Michael J, of Lynnfield, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019 at the age of 96. Born in New York City, he was the son of the late John M. Tomich and Mary (Chantala) Tomich, immigrants from Eastern Europe looking for a better life for their children. Michael was in aviation school as WW2 started, and served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant airplane mechanic stationed in Northern Africa. After the war, he earned his Bachelor's degree from NYU under the GI Bill of Rights and began a 50 year career as an engineer at General Electric. In 1955, he married Helen, the love of his life, and in 1958 they moved to Lynnfield to raise their family. He worked tirelessly, receiving numerous supervisory promotions, and was credited for the invention of a system to contain broken turbine blades in the event of a jet engine failure. As a member of the self-sufficient "Greatest Generation," he performed almost every home and car repair project, with meticulous precision. As a good neighbor, he generously gave of himself with his expertise, tools, and time. As a good father and grandfather, he gave his love and support, and delighted in the successes and achievements of his family. As a good husband, he showed his love for his wife in ways too numerous to count. He had a passion for square dancing, opera, and symphonies, and took great pride in his lawn and his shrubs. He waged daily war with the dandelions and squirrels who threatened his property. After retirement at the age of 75, he relished his regular meetings with his GE "old timers" groups. His resiliency was near legendary, as he bounced back from many medical aliments over his final 21 years, including falling off the roof at age 88 while trying to clear the gutters. He was a testimony to the power of exercise, good nutrition, and clean living. He cherished 60 years of marriage to Helen, who worked to the age of 90. He would greet her at their front door with his signature daiquiri when she returned home. After her passing, Michael's children and grandchildren treasured their time with him, knowing that every moment with him was a gift. He leaves behind John M. Tomich and wife Susan of Lynnfield, Carol-Ann Sullivan and her husband Joseph of Peabody, and Paul S. Tomich and his wife Lisa Stevenson of Brookline. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, David and his wife Claire of Cambridge, MA, Theresa Sullivan of Niskayuna, NY, Jennifer Tomich of Brookline MA, and Daniel Sullivan of Peabody, MA. Also survived by his sister-in-law Catherine Wubbenhorst of North Miami, FL. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Blitvich) Tomich. Funeral is from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave, Wakefield, on Friday, March 22 at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Maria Goretti Church, 112 Chestnut St, Lynnfield, MA at 10 AM. Visitation for friends and relatives will be held at the Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, from 4-8 PM. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boston Lyric Opera, PO Box 847897, Boston, MA 02284.

Mike was my first boss coming off the EDP program in Lynn in 1970 and he was a great teacher and mentor. I had prepared for a career in the auto industry and decided that the US auto companies weren't interested in technology in 1968 as I left graduate school so I switched to the world of gas turbines. Mike was very helpful in my transition from the technology of piston engines to gas turbines. He played an important role in making me very happy with my decision to switch career paths. In recent times it was great to see him again in GE "Old Timer" settings. In addition to what he was in the business world he was one of those people who truly deserved the label "Class Act". I will miss not being able to see him when I am back in New England this summer.

Michael,
It is hard for me to find words to express my thoughts and feelings about you. Kindness, nevertheless, echoes in any sentence that I can think of. Then, it is intelligence that repeats in my mind. And yes, your sense of humor brings a smile in my mind too. How could I forget Meet Helen, my first wife? Mike, from jet engines to chimneys, music, and your special shrimp cocktail recipe, your knowledge has always impressed me. Knowing you were a gift and talking to you, what a great pleasure. I simply love you, although, love is not as strong as I like it to be to convey my feelings. You always understood what I was saying even before I spoke it. God bless you my dear friend.

Where do I begin with what an amazing person Michael was? When I was in Jr. High School, many years ago, I met Michael's daughter, Carol Ann. Carol Ann and I became friends and I would go over to her house and that's how I met Carol Ann's mom and dad, Michael and her two brothers, Paul and John. Carol Ann's parents were another set of parents for me and her brothers were two brothers that I had never had before. I was at Carol Ann's house numerous times for meals and cook outs and all kinds of things. When Carol Ann went to college and I would come home for visits, I would always go to see Carol Ann's parents. Her mom would always make me something to eat and her dad, Michael would also be busy doing something, working on his car or doing something energetic. Michael took Carol Ann and I to see the movie Tommy, many years ago and I thought he was such a cool dad. Michael also taught me how to ride his motor cycle, which I couldn't believe. I wondered how on earth he could be so trusting of me. Michael had a rare enthusiasm that I have rarely ever seen with anyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed a helping hand. After his wife Helen, passed his enthusiasm did not diminish and I loved when I would get his annual Christmas photo with his four grandchildren, David, Jenny, Teresa and Danny. Michael was a rare man among men and his passing will be felt by many I am sure, including me.

Mike was a great friend and college for many tears. We worked on many projects over the years at GE and I was always impressed with Mike's knowledge attention to detail. After his retirement he kept in touch and we always had spirited discussions on a number of topics. He loved to come to our luncheons and have his club sandwich cut in half. I will miss you Mike. Thanks for being a good friend!

Mr. Tomich fondly known as "Mr. T" always greeted people with a warm smile and a good, firm handshake. "How ARE you?", he'd ask. He was caring and kind. He will be very much missed. Love, Joni Dillon
