Michael P. Townsend

Michael Peter Townsend Sr., of Philadelphia, PA, passed away on September 21, 2025, surrounded by family at the age of 67. A proud Philadelphian through and through, Mike was a devoted fan of all things Philly sports - especially the Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers. He never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish or the Temple Owls. Whether it was game day or just a regular Tuesday, he wore his team spirit like a badge of honor. Mike's heart was always with St. Thomas More, where he attended school until its closing. He went on to graduate from West Catholic School for Boys in 1977, and later became a proud graduate of Temple University - a place and community that remained close to his heart throughout his life. Mike was a pivotal part of the EOM community - dependable, generous, and always ready with a helping hand. He could often be seen riding his bike around town, waving to neighbors, catching up with friends, and enjoying the rhythm of the neighborhood he loved. Above all, Mike was a family man. He was the proud husband of Kate, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership. He was a devoted father to Michael, a supportive father-in-law to Kelli, and found his greatest joy in being Molly's Poppi - a role he cherished more than any other. He will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, his deep love for family and community, and the way he made everyone feel like they mattered. His legacy is one of laughter, kindness, and connection - the kind that leaves a lasting imprint on all who knew him. Mike is survived by his loving wife Kate (nee McGinn) , his devoted son Michael and daughter-in-law Kelli, and his beloved granddaughter Molly; he was the cherished son of the late James and Mary Townsend; brother of Jack Townsend and the late James Townsend; as well as extended family and dear friends. Relatives, friends, members of EOM, and the Philadelphia Department of Recreation are invited to his Viewing, Thursday, September 25, 2025 after 7 PM until 9 PM from the Rogers Funeral Home, Inc., 1426-30 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19147 and again on Friday, September 26, 2025 after 8 AM until 9:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM. Interment will follow at SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
