Michael "Mike" Lee Whitley passed away on the afternoon of Friday, March 7th, 2025 in the comfort of his home in Albemarle, North Carolina at the age of 70 years old. He was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 9th, 1955 to Robert Lee Whitley and Evelyn Greene Whitley. He was raised in Charlotte with his parents and his brother Doug Whitley.
Preceding him in death were both of his parents. Michael is survived by his wife of over 48 years, Joyce Cress Whitley, his son Sean Patrick Whitley (Kelly), and his beloved dog, Baxter. He is also survived by his four grandchildren Elisa, Reese, Cohen, and Adriana Whitley. Also surviving is his brother, Doug, along with many dear extended family members.
Michael attended East Mecklenburg High School and briefly attended Central Piedmont Community College before going on to work at National Welders Supply Company for over 30 years. Through his job, Michael found an outlet for his analytical mind. He methodically approached every task with patience and precision, from tediously hand-cutting each picket of the fence in his backyard to carefully crafting shelves for Joyce's craft shed. He beautifully balanced these aspects of his life self with the calm, loving attitude learned in his youth. He translated his work ethic and deep care for others into the greatest roles of his life: husband, father, and grandfather. He attended these roles with his sweet and quiet disposition. His intelligence, kindness, and insight guided his family, of whom he was deeply proud. Michael is remembered by many for his humor, wit, and gentle spirit. His teasing and lighthearted nature will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, March 12th at Hartsell Funeral Homes, located in Albemarle, NC. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, March 13th at Thyatira Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, with Reverend Jimmie Hudson officiating.
Memorials can be made to Tillery Compassionate Care or to Thyatira Presbyterian Church.
