Mike Campbell Obituary

Mike Campbell
Edwardsville - Mike Campbell, 77, of Edwardsville passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 20, 2022. One of six brothers and sisters, Mike and his twin brother were born on March 17, 1945, to Les and Doris (Meni) Campbell of Collinsville.
After graduating from Collinsville High School in 1963, Mike served in the U.S. Air Force from 1963 to 1967 at San Vito dei Normanni Air Station in Brindisi, Italy. He then went on to receive multiple degrees from SIUE including a Masters of Science in City Planning.
While at SIUE in 1968, Mike met Myra (Highlander) Campbell, and the two would go on to share their lives together for over 50 years. Mike and Myra were married on November 23, 1974, at Eden Church and treasured their many years together raising a family. It was also around this time that Mike developed his love of farming while learning from his father-in-law, Herb Highlander. This would go on to become one of his life's greatest passions. Mike farmed for 48 years, completing his last corn harvest this past fall.
Mike also felt a calling to public service that would combine his wealth of knowledge related to agriculture, city planning, and government. His many accomplishments included serving as President of the Madison County Farm Bureau, Chairman of the Madison County Zoning Board, Chairman of the Edwardsville Democratic Precinct Committee, Supervisor of Edwardsville Township, Chairman of the Agricultural Advisory Committee and Director of Special Projects for former U.S. Representative Jerry Costello, a member of the Executive Committee of the Southwestern Illinois Planning Commission, and a member of the U.S Secretary of Agriculture's Advisory Committee.
In addition to his love for family, farming, and public service, Mike was an avid reader and history buff. He also developed many close friendships throughout the years. To his friends - your shed visits, phone calls, and laughs meant the world to him.
Mike is survived by his wife Myra; children Travis (Brooke) Campbell and Tara (Michael) Lotz; grandkids Mason, Eowynn, Brayden, and Alexander; brothers Jerry and Pat Campbell; sisters Kathy Tracy and Peggy Duhr; sister-in-law Shirley Highlander; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents; sister Sharon Taylor; father-in-law and mother-in-law Herb and Eunice Highlander; sisters-in-law Sherlyn Witt, Molly Campbell, and Venita Campbell; and brothers-in-law Paul Witt, Al Duhr, and Ron Highlander.
In celebration of Mike's life, a visitation will be held at Weber and Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville on Friday, May 27, from 3:30pm-7:00pm. Funeral services will be at Eden Church in Edwardsville on Saturday, May 28 at 10:30am. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family has requested that memorials be made to VITAS Hospice Care or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Condolences may be expressed online at weberfuneralhome.com.

On this anniversary of Mike's passing- i often think of Mike and his observations about politics and life. I know this time of year was always busy for him as he was preparing for planting, he was busy, got tired but it was something he loved. He is finally at rest. Frank Miles

Mike, you kindness and humor will truly be missed. Our favorite memory: showing up to Christmas Eve after everyone was gone. You graciously welcomed us into your and Myra´s home while in your pajamas and robe. After a laughable visit, as we got up to leave, you promptly walked over to the staircase and yelled up, "Okay they are leaving, you can all come down now." Thankful for being "family", but more so, thankful for being "friends". Love, Tj and Jami Mattison

Mike's advice, knowledge and experience was invaluable to me in the many public service roles I have held. His service to the people of the township, the region, the state and to the federal government extended across many areas, topics and projects and his work touched so many people. Including me. Mike your service and your advice will be missed. He worked tirelessly on his farm and often worked from morning until night. That's the kind of guy he was. Now take your rest. Frank Miles
