Milagros "Millie" Maldonado was born in Yauco, Puerto Rico, on February 28, 1940. She grew up in Puerto Rico and moved to the United States at the age of 18, when her father brought her to Texas to attend college. She began studying at Our Lady of the Lake University and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Science.
Her first job was working for the City of San Antonio. San Antonio's first medical examiner, Dr. Robert Hausman, hired her as a lab technologist. She had a wonderful gift for science and enjoyed analyzing blood and tissue specimens of all types. After some time, she moved on to work in various hospitals throughout the city as a medical technologist. Among those were Baptist Downtown Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital, Northeast Baptist Hospital, University Hospital and Veteran's Administration Hospital. Over the years, her career also included working for private labs in the city. She took much pride in her work and was very respected for her vast experience and knowledge in her field. Many of her jobs included supervisory positions. As a dedicated and hard-working employee who loved what she did, she worked until she was 80 years old. Her last 10 working years were spent in the laboratory at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in San Antonio until she was forced to retire due to illness. She was a lifelong Catholic and parishioner at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
She had several close friendships from her college years and also treasured many friendships with her former friends and co-workers who stayed in touch after many years. She was known for her sense of humor and love of nature, especially dogs, cats and birds. Her generous heart was known to many, especially her brothers, sisters and other relatives. She was loved by so many people in her life who were lucky enough to know her. In her younger years, she enjoyed traveling to places like Hawaii and Bolivia. She visited the Grand Canyon and Big Bend National Park. She also went to Seattle, San Francisco and Las Vegas. She enjoyed fishing at the coast and birdwatching.
She was preceded in death by parents, Andres Maldonado and Jova Morales; step-mother, Pauline Maldonado; sister Rosa Martinez, brothers Sergio Maldonado and Antonio Martinez, and nephew, Jose Luis Maldonado, Jr.
Survived by: brothers, Andres Jr., Jose Luis, Mark and wife, Teri, Michael and husband, Walter Teachout; sisters, Yvonne Vasquez and Carmen Martinez, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Monday, November 24, 2025 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with the Rosary to begin at 6:30 pm.
