Mildred A. Copeland, 87, of Auburn, Maine, died March 17, 2025, at Clover Health Care in Auburn, Maine.
She was born on October 23, 1937, to Virginia and James B. Copeland in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Millie began her education at St. Katherine's School in Torresdale, a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia. She continued at Eden Hall Academy, also in Torresdale. She attended college at Holy Family University and enjoyed being part of the new institution.
She married John C. Carney in August 1961, and they had two children, Maryagnes Renee, and John Benedict.
Millie moved to South Florida in 1967, first living in Leisure City and then moving to Miami in 1971. She worked as a library clerk at St. John Vianney Seminary, and, later, a media specialist at St. Brendan High School. She retired from St. Brendan High School in 2014 after 39 years of working for the Archdiocese of Miami.
Millie enjoyed continuing her education after she arrived in Florida. She attended Drexel University and Florida State University in the summers, earning her first Masters Degree. Later, she earned an additional Masters Degree in Education from Florida International University.
Millie remained active in her service to the Catholic Church outside of work hours, serving as a lector and Eucharistic Minister and later attending St. Augustine Church in Coral Gables, Florida for many years.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Mary Patel-Gallagher, and husband, Eugene, and her son, John Benedict Carney and wife, Suzanne, Millie is also survived by grandson, Jeff Carr, and granddaughters, Alyse Carney, husband Liam O'Brien, and Emily Carney, partner Peter Dinger. Millie is also survived by her sister, Dolores Copeland, rscj.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Virginia (Mellon) and James B. Copeland, and her brother, James Lawrence Copeland.
Funeral arrangements are by Albert & Burpee Funeral Home, Lewiston, Maine.
The interment will be in South Florida at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Cemetery, Miami, Florida. (Date to be determined.)
