Mildred Edwards Obituary

Mildred "Mickey" Edwards, 77, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on August 2, 2025 after a long illness. She was born on March 30, 1948 to Matthew Matesich and Margaret Gonda in Newark, OH. After graduating from Rosary College, she received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She went on to work for the D.C. Public Defender Service, the Civil Rights Division of the Justice Department, and as the Chief Staff Counsel for the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit. In 1988, she was appointed to the D.C. Superior Court where she served for fifteen years. At the end of her judicial term, she elected to pursue a Master of Divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union and served as the Director of Religious Education for Adults at St. Mark Parish in Vienna, VA until 2012. Inspired by Catholic social teachings and Pope Francis's Laudato Si', she continued to facilitate faith formation groups at St. John Neumann Parish in Reston, VA, and to give public lectures until her death. She is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Sr. Mary Andrew Matesich, O.P. She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Seidman, her son, Andrew Seidman, her granddaughter, Lyra Seidman, and her sisters, Margaret Gruenke and Martha Matesich. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 11900 Lawyers Rd., Reston, VA, on Monday, August 11 at 11 a.m. For a full obituary, please go to:

Creation was blessed the day Mickie came into being and she lived life fully with compassion, kindness, courage, wisdom and a generous and inviting smile. Surely God has said,
"Well done".
Grateful for her example. ....

I worked closely with Mickey on the staff of St. Mark Church in Vienna, VA. We put together RCIA ritual celebrations and Easter Vigil liturgies, shared lots of laughs and theological insights, rejoiced together as Pope Francis was elected, and had many deep conversations about liturgy, music and theology. Mickey was an important part of my spiritual journey. She was a wonderful woman and friend. She is in God's arms!

I was proud to know Mickey for most of my adult life. I was a colleague with her as a judge on the Superior Court. We began our judicial careers in the same year. When I met Mickey during my senior year at Georgetown University, she was one of several people who influenced me to attend law school. Two years apart, we later each clerked for Judge Spottswood W. Robinson, III, on the D.C. Circuit. I admired Mickey for her devotion to faith issues. This was the real Mickey. I will miss her sincerity, and I wish the family peace.

Wonderful Judge Edwards. She was greatly loved at the Superior Court and we were privileged to appear before her. May she rest in eternal joy and peace. Her memory is such a blessing.
