Age 93, died peacefully at home on December 28, 2023. She was born on March 5, 1930 in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of Charles Brady and Mildred (Estel) Brady. Mildred, or "Milly" as she was known, grew up in the North Side of Pittsburgh. She graduated as Salutatorian and President of St. Benedict Academy class of 1947. She attended the school of nursing at Duquesne University and, upon graduation, was a visiting outreach nurse, serving residents of the Hill District in Pittsburgh. She married William J. Flaherty in 1954 and was a full-time mother for their four children. Bill and Milly were married for more than fifty years. While raising her family, Milly reentered nursing as a school nurse, later as a pediatric nurse practitioner, and finally earning a Ph.D. in Nursing and serving as an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Pittsburgh. In later years, Milly enjoyed her retirement, travelled with her husband Bill, was a published poet and children's book author, and took up painting in her seventies. She was also a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She will be remembered for her kindness, empathy, intelligence, and sharp wit. She will also be remembered for planning and documenting family vacations that were epic in scope and foundational in family lore. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Bill, her oldest brother Fr. Charles Brady Jr., and her younger sister Dr. Virginia (Brady) Gaffney. Surviving are her younger brother, Dr. Harry Brady of St. Louis, Mo; her children William J. Flaherty, Jr. and his wife Joyce, Stephen Flaherty and his husband Trevor Hardwick, Patrick T. Flaherty and his wife Diane, and Maureen (Flaherty) Katz and her husband Edmond; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Flaherty) Martinez, William J. Flaherty III, Annie Flaherty, Elizabeth Flaherty, Kathleen Flaherty, Abigail Katz and Madeline Katz; two great grandchildren, Rose Martinez and Sibyl Martinez. There will be a viewing for friends and family on Tuesday, January 2, and Wednesday, January 3, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM, at Beinhauer Funeral Home, 2630 W. Liberty Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15216. A mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, January 4, 10:00 AM at St. Bernard's Church in St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 311 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15216. While flowers are gratefully accepted, those wishing to donate in memoriam may contribute to the Mildred Brady and Rema Martin Charitable Eye Foundation, 12622 Knighton Trail, Sunset Hills MO 63127; or the Angel Fund for St. Bernard/Ave Maria Academy (https://avemariapgh.org/donate-now).
