Mildred Junek Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home - Huntsville on Nov. 18, 2025.
Mildred Maxwell Junek of Huntsville passed away at home on November 16, 2025. She was trying hard to reach her 100th birthday so we could have a big celebration with her family and friends, but our Lord had other plans for her in heaven.
She was born in Singleton, Texas on January 23, 1926, to William McKinley Dixon and Frances Annie Peteete Dixon.
Mildred is survived by nieces, nephews, family, and countless friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Curtis Maxwell and second husband Frank Junek of 14 years. Parents Wiliam and Fannie Dixon and her four awesome brothers William "Bill" McKinnley Dixon Jr., J T Dixon, H C Dixon, and infant John Leroy Dixon along with other family members.
She was a member of Second Church of Huntsville for over 50 years. When asked about her personal conversion (when you have a conversation with Mildred it will be a thorough story) she stated "it was a long time ago. I was 11 years old. I grew up in a small community in Grimes County. We lived four blocks from the church. We lived right on busy Highway 90, and my mom did not want me to walk up the road by myself. Mom was involved with my three younger brothers and could not walk me to church. She had a friend that lived close to us and as they came walking to church, she let me go with them. Our church usually had two revivals each year. This was in the Spring during the morning service. The Lord spoke to me this morning and I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior".
Mildred was proud of the fact she was independent. When people would ask her how she was able to be so healthy and beautiful at her age, she would say "the Lord blessed me and I had good genes." She would talk about her loved ones that were already gone and how her current family and friends were "getting up in age." The word "old" was not part of her vocabulary. Some of the words that her family and friends use to describe her were independent, vivacious, special, amazing, kind, sweet, positive, thoughtful, supportive, and a mentor. She had a way of taking charge, teaching, organizing, and guiding others to be humble, patient, kind, and respectful. She was "Aunt Mildred" to everyone. She will be missed and remembered by those that were blessed to be part of her life.
Mildred retired from a long and distinguished career with Sam Houston State University. She worked as an assistant to the dean in the College of Business Administration. For 38 years, her professionalism and kindness earned her the respect and admiration of all who knew her. She was a mother figure to all the staff members.
Mildred was a member of Walker County Republican Women group for many years. She was a proud conservative Republican and could hold her ground when talking politics.
Her husband, Curtis, worked in the oil field. Mildred was able to join him on his jobs in other countries. She lived in Venezuela, Liberia, and Nigeria and visited all of Central America, where she made many lifelong friends. Mildred was full of stories about all the countries she had the privilege of visiting.
