Mildred "Millie" Kersey, nee Tonkovich,  was born on March 11, 1927 in Ambridge, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at home in Hyattsville, Maryland on October 13, 2024 after bravely battling health issues in her later years. She was surrounded by her loving family during her final moments.

Millie was the daughter of first-generation Croatian immigrants. Her upbringing instilled in her a strong work ethic and deep-rooted values that she carried throughout her life. After graduating high school, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she contributed her skills as a confidential typist for the Signal Corps during World War II. Her career continued to thrive as she took on a role at the Internal Revenue Service showcasing her dedication and resilience.

In the midst of her career, she found love while cruising down the Potomac River where she met and married Bill Kersey, a charming Marine. Together they built a life in Hyattsville, Maryland, where they welcomed three wonderful daughters into their family. After taking a hiatus from her career to focus on raising her daughters, Millie returned to work serving as a secretary at Hyattsville Middle School and later becoming a service representative at WSSC, ultimately retiring from there.

Millie's legacy is enriched by the love of her family. She is survived by her three daughters: Janice and Bill Darnell, Mary Kay Kersey and Jack Prushinski, and Donna and Mark Love. Millie also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren and twelve beloved great-grandchildren, all of whom were a source of immense joy and pride throughout her life.

An enthusiastic football fan, Millie delighted in watching games, especially with her grandchildren. The Washington Commanders held a special place in her heart, closely followed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. In addition to her passion for sports, she enjoyed bowling, participating in exercise classes, and traveling to create lasting memories.

Millie was known for her strength, love, and sense of humor. As a role model, she taught those around her the true meaning of kindness and laughter. Her family reflects on her long and productive life with gratitude, hoping to embody the example she set.

Janice and Mary Kay would like to express profound gratitude to Donna and Mark for the sacrifices made and the loving care provided to Mom.

Millie Kersey was deeply loved, and her absence will be felt profoundly. She will always be remembered in the hearts of her family and friends.
