How do you condense 93 years of a blessed and fruitful life into one page of written statements? You don't! You just concentrate on the things that drove and influenced that life the most. For Mom, Mildred Lee Smith that was God, family and a life of service to others.
Born 5-5-1932 to Caroline (Turner) McBroom and John McBroom Jr of Wynnewood, and Raymond Stevenson of Pauls Valley. She received her "well done" on 10-29-2025 in Sulphur.
Mom, Mama, Granny, Grandma, Aunt Mildred, Mil, Sis Smith, Red, Ms. Mildred, Ms. Smith, friend, Cuz, or whatever name you may have called her, was a strong woman, strong in her beliefs and strong willed in her determinations to do right and treat others right. She fought a good fight and finished her course, persevering until her change came. Baptized at the age of 12 at the Hopewell Baptist Church, Big Woods, Wynnewood. She moved her membership when she moved to town and united with the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in 1948. She served as a faithful member until death, and worked fruitfully until she became
bedridden and wasn't physically able to work as she desired. She held numerous church offices and positions over the many years. She served as Mission President, teacher, Junior Mission Director, and especially enjoyed serving over the Kitchen Ministry. She could be found shopping, preparing, serving food and mostly supervising others anytime there was an occasion involving eating food or feeding someone.
Mom, began her work career as a domestic, cleaning homes over the years for several prominent families. She went back to school and earned her GED, at which time she started working as cook, teacher's aide, and teacher for the Indian Nation Head Start Program. She then was hired at the Pauls Valley State School in which she worked many years retiring in the top position of 24-Hour Facility Supervisor.
Mom spent many years as President of the Wynnewood Senior Citizens Center, in which at one time she almost single-handedly kept it going. Purchasing, planning, budgeting and saving thousands of dollars that was turned in to her successors as operational funds to continue the Center.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Oren Smith Sr., Siblings; Joe McNeil (Rena), Johnnie Mae Jackson (Zeke), Erma Jean Allen (Ivason), Lois Stevenson, and Frankie Ford and many of their children. One daughter, Vanessa, daughter in law, Cookie. Oren's children; Friendly, Olivia, Marcie Lee, Ora Mae and Alice. Oren's grandchildren that she raised Lynn, Calvin and Alex. Oren's other grandchildren
Eric, Chris, Becky, Kenneth and Doris.
Mom's biggest legacy is the family that she leaves behind to carry on her faith, her love, and her gift of servanthood to God and mankind. Serving as her testament to all are her sons; Arthur Joe Sr., his children, JJ, DeDe, Cona and Meme; Cecil, his son Jamie; Oren Jr., his children Shernae, Cam, and Oren III; and Sammy, and his son Richard; along with her daughters Calline (Kirk), and their children Sheldon and VaNessa; Cecilyn (Rick) and their children Ken, Shayla, and Richard, and Rosalind (Roy), and their children; Roy Jr., Terry, TaNiesha and Key. Along with 44 biological, great grandchildren, 2 great, great grandchildren, and another in the making. She also leaves to mourn her passing; one sister Dalphene Harper, nephews; John McNeil, Zeke Jackson Jr., Bob Jackson and nieces; Mary Wright, Virgie Ranson and their children and grandchildren.
