Mildred B. Thomas was the 13 th child to the late Martin and Isabella Benson born on July 17, 1923, in Delaware Township (now Cherry Hill), New Jersey. Her day of celebration to go home to our Lord came on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
Mildred attended the Delaware Township school system. Thereafter she was employed by the Campbell Soup Company in Camden, NJ during World War II. She then became a residential housekeeper until she caught the eye of and married the love of her life Emmett P. Thomas, Sr. in 1951. Emmett Lovingly called her by "Jennie" after their favorite 1948 film "Portrait of
Jennie". Mildred and Emmett shared and celebrated 39 years of marriage until Emmett Sr. went home to be with the Lord in 1990.
Mildred accepted Christ in her early adult life and loved the Lord. She made it a priority in life to deliver His word throughout her community. She had a heart for those in need and would often bathe, feed, and clothe children in her neighborhood. Each Wednesday, she also hosted bible study at her home for the children in her North Camden neighborhood sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship. Mildred displayed her love for singing by serving in the choir as a member of Calvary Bible Tabernacle in Camden, NJ. Later in life, while living in a senior housing complex (Riverview Towers) she led individuals to Christ while conducting bible study with the residents. After moving to Plainfield, New Jersey she joined Shiloh Baptist Church where she
attended the Senior Bible Study and Shiloh Institute Of Biblical Learning (SIBLE). Her favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 3:5-6.
Affectionately known as "Mil" and "Gigi" she enjoyed spending time with her family and was well known for her cooking, especially her pound cakes and cookies. Mildred loved watching Jeopardy and Murder She Wrote. She also would spend hours doing word search books, which kept her mind sharp and spunky. An amazing fact: Mildred read the entire bible each year for
the past 36 years.
Mildred was preceded in death by her 6 sisters and 5 brothers; husband the late Emmett P. Thomas, Sr.; son Emmett P. Thomas, Jr.; and son Jeffery H. Thomas (Brenda).
God shared His awesome blessing with us for 101 years and we will cherish her memories forever. She leaves to cherish those memories her five children: Karen L. Foster, Juan D. Vega, Rochelle A. Cunningham (Clarence), Helen J. Harris (Alfred) and Husain N. Sabir (Lorraine). Her fourteen grandchildren: Colleen, Cheryl (Larry), Milton, Susan, Barry, Lynn, Sukari (Ronald),
Kimberly, Azuri, Dawn (Churchill), Deborah, Saleem, Shadeed (Najibah), and Seidah (Bassirou); 2 bonus grandchildren Katie and Angie; 25 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved and prayed for her. Mildred will be deeply missed. Lovingly submitted by the family.
