Our loving mother, Mildred Mary Weishaupt Townsend, died peacefully at her home in Saluda, Virginia on September 29, 2025. She was 98.5 years old. She was the eldest of six children born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Mildred Mary Klein and Bernhardt Jacob Weishaupt.
She married Richard Volney Townsend on July 1, 1945, and moved to Auburn, New York. Mildred loved children and said that she would have as many children as God would give her. Despite having ten children of her own, she always had room in her heart for more. She babysat and taught Sunday school for many years.
In 1979, she relocated to Saluda. She began assisting elders in their homes and volunteering at Riverside Saluda Convalescent Center. Mildred enjoyed knitting, crocheting, jig saw puzzles and playing scrabble in her free time. She remained active in her church. Her faith in God, family and friends were the most important things in her life.
Mildred is survived by eight of her children: Janet (David) Chapin, Nancy Scott, Susan Hinds, Joann (James) Page, Thomas Townsend, Christopher Townsend, James (Judy) Townsend and Sara (Mike) Luther. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Richard, her sons Raymond and Kevin Townsend and her grandchildren: Cara Chapin and Tyler Page.
