Millard Tierce Obituary

Millard "Lu" Tierce III

December 5, 1942 - September 16, 2024

Benbrook, Texas - FORT WORTH- Dr. Millard Lucien "Lu" Tierce III DVM, 81, passed away on September 16, 2024.

Services will be on Friday, Oct 4th at Greenwood Memorial Park Live Oak Chapel at 3100 White Settlement Rd, Ft.Worth, Tx. Funeral is at 2:30 p.m. with a reception following. Viewing will be prior to the service from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Millard Lucien "Lu" Tierce III, DVM was born on December 5, 1942 in Mineral Wells, Texas to parents Col Millard Lucien Tierce Jr, DVM and Evelyn Ruth Tierce. As army brats, he and his three sisters lived many places. When he was a little boy, Lu lived in Oaxaca and developed a love for Mexico that lasted his entire lifetime. As a high school student in Okinawa Japan and then in Clarksville, Tennessee, he was a star running back. His senior football coach even asked him to intentionally fail English so he could play for another year, but his lifelong dream to become a veterinarian was calling him back to the Lone Star State.

Lu began college at Texas A&M University in 1961 and graduated vet school in 1966. He completed undergraduate and vet school in just 5 years, all while working at the Sinclair gas station he co-owned in College Station. In 1962, Lu met fellow army brat and the love of his life, Lynda, and they married in 1964. She worked beside him in his practice for most of their 60 year marriage. They had three children: Becky, Elizabeth and Buddy.

Lu lived and breathed veterinary medicine. In his 48 years of practicing at the Camp Bowie Animal Clinic in Ft. Worth, his passion was to help people by caring for their pets. Spending 7 days a week in the clinic for his entire career, his clients always knew he would be there when they needed him. Lu was a brilliant, intense, tenacious and dedicated man and he proudly mentored many young people who went on to become veterinarians, too!

In the rare moments away from work, the majority of his time was spent in continuing education. He also enjoyed fine wines and food, snow skiing, beekeeping, spending time at the family farm, watching his kids and grandkids play sports, attending Aggie Muster and (of course) he loved watching the Texas Aggies play football! Gig'em Aggies!!!

The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care Lu received from Colonial Gardens Memory Care and Holy Savior Hospice. They made his last 4 months bearable. We are requesting that in lieu of flowers you make a contribution to Alzheimer's Foundation of America or All Saints' Episcopal Church (4936 Dexter Ave, 76107) who have guided us through this difficult time.

Lu is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Lynda and Mary and his daughter Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife Lynda, daughter Becky and her son Blaine, son Buddy, daughter-in-law Kelly and their children Mattye and Luke, and sister Robin. There will be a private family burial. The pallbearers are Dr. M.L. "Buddy" Tierce IV, M.L. "Luke" Tierce V, Blaine Lovett, and Dr. Terrell Rourk.

I cherish my memories of Dr. Tierce. I am sad that he has left this physical world.I think of him all the time, and wish I had been there as a friend when he needed all of us. I was late to find him, though I have tried several times. My love and sympathy to the family. There is no one like Dr. Tierce .He taught me how to tube feed my dog ,and i did so for 10 years. I think of him always. Chrysti Reeves -Turner and Henry Turner

I only learned of Dr. Tierce's passing this weekend and Lance and I were heartbroken. He was the most amazing vet. In addition to our own dogs, we had many foster puppies and no matter what day or what time of day or night, we knew we could call Dr. Tierce. He saved a couple of our personal dogs. Lance would bake him apricot scones and he would often keep one in his jacket pocket while he worked. There are simply no words and I am so sorry we missed his services. We have missed him and Lynda!

I started going to Dr Tierce in the early 1990´s. I was referred to him by Gaye and he came highly recommended. I was devastated when my rottie puppy Lexie broke her leg on the growth plate and all the surgeons I spoke with were not confident nor very reassuring on the procedure that would need to be done. They were going to charge an enormous amount to do a procedure that they had either never done or only did one or two and the outcomes were not promising. When I went to Dr Tierce he reassured me my Nikki would be fine and that he had done this procedure many times. He also took her right away and told me not to worry about the finances as we could work out a payment plan. I was just out of college and this meant the world to me. I would joke that Nikki´s second home was Camp Bowie animal hospital as she stayed there a lot and they would get a kick out of her antics. In fact I think they hardly put her in her crate except after a surgery. I trusted Dr Tierce with all my pets for over 20 years and learned so much from him. I considered the Tierces as family. I brought many people to him and they all loved him as I did. I have so many memories that it would take a book to share. He truly loved the animals and was a rare angel on earth. Bottom line is the Tierce family are some of the finest people I have ever known. I am sorry I have just learned of this. Love and hugs to Mrs Tierce and family. May God grant you peace. I am sending prayers for all.

I am so sorry to hear this. Dr. Tierce was a legend in our house... I´ll never forget when he looked at me in the waiting room and said come here. I knew others had been waiting before me but I knew he didn´t want me to wait any longer. He took me to the room said ..:: there´s cancer... here, here, and here. I know you´re about to graduate from nursing school so I´m going to send her home on meds but it´s gonna be soon. I came back the next weekend and said ok let´s just put her down. I can´t walk around knowing her expiration date. He put my dog down peacefully while she was eating a bacon cheeseburger. I will LOVE THAT MAN FOREVER.

Dear Lynda and Family,
For the first time in my long life, I have no words to express my sorrow. This man was from Heaven and has now returned. He performed miracles daily and there will never be anyone else like him. I agree with each and every one of these reviews, especially my sister, Mary's. I love you all and cannot click "other" because he was family from the time I was little.

If I may add to my previous memories, I remembered two thing that tell of Dr. Tierce's expertise. I called on a veterinary school class mate of his, who told me that if he got a patient that he didn't have the expertise to help, he would send the client to Dr. Tierce. Then Dr. Tierce was one of the first and few veterinarians to treat his patients in hyperbaric chambers. Hyperbaric chambers allow patients with wounds to be treated in higher concentrations than normal, and can heal when conventional methods fail.

I still have dogs that Dr. Tierce took care of. He once put a hand made "plate" in the head of a dog I had that a larger dog had crushed her skull. Probably hit me 5 or 6 more years with that dog. He was the Dr. House of vets to me. If you added all the extra years, end to end, people got with their animals because of him, I bet it would be over 1000 years. I remember how personal he took it when he couldn´t save another one of mine. The world is less kind now.

Rest in peace Dr. Tierce. Condolences and prayers to the family, Lynda, Becky and Buddy. They felt like family to me. I worked with him off and on many years. A lot of late nights doing surgeries and caring for critical patients. He taught me so much, I will never forget him.

My prayers to all of Dr. Tierce's family and loved ones.
I became his client as a referral in the '80's. Our dog Pepper had lost use of her back legs.
She walked again in his care, with no surgery.
For 30 more years he took great care of our dogs and fosters.
One of a kind gifted Veterinarian.
Rest in Heavenly Peace Dr. Tierce

To the family of Dr Tierce, so sorry to hear of your loss. I´ve known Dr Tierce since I was a child, as he treated all our dogs while I was growing up. Then he continued treating the next generation of our dogs in adulthood. I cannot say enough about Dr Tierce. He was the most devoted professional I ever met. His clients were the animals. I remember being at the clinic one night at 10pm. A family dog was having seizures, and as always, Dr Tierce was there. He was always there when we needed him. His passing is truly the end of an era. Helping animals for 50 years when Ft Worth was small. Literally treating generations of family pets. He understood our fur babies were family members. Our beloved black lab, Bear, developed a brain tumor. Dr Tierce came to our house a week before Christmas to lead our boy to the rainbow bridge. I met almost every family member because at one time or another, they all worked at the clinic. Thank you, Dr Tierce, for helping all our animals.

My deepest condolences. Dr. Tierce was an amazing vet who was dedicated and had so much compassion for his clients. He treated our family dog in the 70's with back issues. Full recovery. He treated my little zebra finch with a broken leg. No Charge. Dr Tierce and his staff welcomed my little bird openly to stay at the office during his recovery. They said he was a blessing to have around the office. There are a lot of very good dedicated vets with compassion but in my opinion he was one of the best. When I drive down camp bowie on my way home from work everyday I always remember him kindly. Not a day goes by that I do not look at his office that was on the north side of camp bowie and the empty lot that once stood his office on the south side of camp bowie. I envision Dr. Tierce being welcomed to Heaven by all the dogs, cats and little birds (just to name a few). Heaven has gained a wonderful Angel. God Bless you Dr. Tierce. Please take care of our very much loved furbabies who have passed before us until we can meet them again at the Rainbow Bridge. May peace be with the family.

I am so very sorry to learn of the death of Dr. Tierce.
We were referred to him in the 1970´s by a friend, and took many, many cats (all rescues) and several dogs to him throughout the years. He ALWAYS took the time to explain a procedure, but he was also the most compassionate and knowledgeable vet we ever used. When our elderly Golden Retriever fell seriously ill, we called the Clinic long after it was closed, but he said to bring her in right away. Not only did he helped us after hours, but on Saturday or Sunday afternoons. He was instrumental in one of our sons attending A&M plus hiring him during high school and also college vacations. Dr. Tierce was simply "the best" and we will miss him. I know he is at "the rainbow bridge" waiting to meet all the pets he helped.

I had the pleasure of providing Dr Tierce supplies while working at Miller Veterinary Supply. As I was delivering his supplies, he always had time to answer questions about how the products that I was delivering worked.
I also had the pleasure of knowing Lynda, Becky and Buddy. My deepest condolences.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear of the passing of Dr. Tierce. He was a wonderful friend and mentor to me. He gave me my first job, while in high school (in the mid-70´s). He taught me so much more than simply the task at hand; caring for others, discipline, leadership, etc. He is the main reason I went to Texas A&M. Such a wonderful man is now looking down on us from Heaven.

I´m so sorry to read this. Dr. Tierce was always amazing with my pets. I started going to him in the 1980s with my little dog, Bandit, and he helped me through several dogs and cats. He always kept them going as long as we could without causing them too much pain. And he always provided a peaceful ending. He wept with me.

I´m sorry I won´t be able to attend his funeral as I´ll be helping my sister after her cancer surgery. But Dr. Tierce will remain in my heart as long as I have pets. Which should be forever.

I want to send my deepest condolences to his family. There was never a more devoted veterinarian than Dr. Tierce. He cared for all my dogs for 40 years. He was always there day or night whenever I needed his help. I knew I could always depend on him. He knew more about dogs than any other vet in Ft Worth. I met customers in his office who had traveled miles to have him treat their pet. He made huge contributions to the advancement of veterinary medicine. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

I was sad to hear of Dr. Tierce's passing. He's been my vet for the majority of my life and the majority of my pets, starting in 1972. My son, Andrew, is now a Veterinarian (TAMU class of 2020, BIMS class of 2012), thanks to Dr. Tierce offering him an opportunity to work beside him in the months before he applied to vet school.
Dr. Tierce was able to diagnose some of the strangest afflictions with incredible accuracy and was always there, preferring to save an animal or their limb, even when other vets would counsel their owners to euthanize. He was the most practical and forward-thinking Veterinarian ever and will be surely missed.
RIP Dr. Tierce.

I am so sorry to read of Dr.Tierce's passing. He meant so much to me & my dogs during the 70s' 80's & 90's. His family's description of him (brilliant, intense, tenacious, dedicated) were certainly true. I would add compassionate. He was the best!

What an amazing doctor to probably a dozen family pets for decades. Lu always went above and beyond to treat them with love and care. He let my husband, Richard, have visitation with them any time day or night. He understood their personalities and what they meant to us. If there is a rainbow bridge, he will be there to help. May light perpetual shine upon him. Barbara

This wonderful man did an amazing thing for me, many many years ago(1986). I'd just lost a double registered Russian Blue kitten due to unexplainable causes. Dr. Tierce sent my baby's body to TX A&M for a necropsy...at no expense to me. I was inconsolable when I lost her, but Dr. Tierce's compassion is remembered to this day. I've never forgotten his act of kindness.
