Obituary for
Milton Arthur "Mick" Umsted III
Mr. Milton "Mick" Arthur Umsted, III, of Sherwood, Arkansas, departed this life on Saturday, May 10, 2025, in Cabot, Arkansas, at the age of 76, with his family by his side. He was born in Newport, Arkansas, on October 15, 1948, the son of Milton Arthur Umsted, Jr. and Virginia (Hinkle) Umsted Castleberry.
Mick was raised in Newport and then attended Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tennessee. He returned to his hometown and graduated from Newport High School. He then went on to receive his associates degree in Hospitality.
On July 12, 1969, Mick married Shirley Ann Rhodes, with whom he had been in love since he was a young teenager. They had two daughters, Elizabeth and Andrea, who still argue about who was actually his favorite daughter. Mick lived his life to take care of others, never leaving his wife's side when she was sick. He was often a father figure to his daughters' friends, offering help or support without even being asked.
Mick enjoyed managing restaurants in Osceola, Arkadelphia, Blytheville, and Searcy, before he realized his true passion for sales. He had the personality and charisma that allowed him to sell anything to anyone, but until he retired, he sold business machines across the state at Royal Business Machines and Arkansas Copier Center.
Mick never passed on an opportunity to dance. He was so good, in fact, he could even make the worst dancer appear to be almost as good as he was! You could often find him singing in church on Sundays as Shirley played the piano beside him.
Mick is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Shirley Ann (Rhodes) Umsted, who died in 2008; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Castleberry; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Bunch and husband, Jason, of Cabot, Arkansas, and Andrea Kopchick and husband, Ryan, of Garfield, Arkansas; and two grandchildren, Cade Umsted Bunch and Jamie Ann Bunch; his loving sisters, Jamie Castleberry, Betty Young and husband, Larry, to whom Mick could often turn for support or advice. He will also be dearly missed by his sister-in-law, Nancy Fountain and husband, Darrell; his nieces and nephews, Larry and Jay Young, Virginia Trammell, Marty Trieschmann, Tammy Satterwhite, and Tonya Suarez; and many other friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Walnut Grove Cemetery, with Mrs. LaNita Daniels officiating. Friends may visit at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home on Tuesday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org or to Camp Aldersgate at campaldersgate.net
Those honored to serve as pallbearers are Lawrence Milton Young, Caleb Milton Young, Darrell Fountain, John L. Conner, Jr., Marvin Hare, and Cade Umsted Bunch. Honorary pallbearers are Lawrence Nall Young, James Umsted Pattee, Lucas Ryan Young, and James Umsted Young.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cabot Nursing and Rehab and Hospice Home Care in Searcy for their compassion, care, and support during Mick's final days. You are appreciated for all you do.
Daddy, we love you so much and will miss you every minute, but we know you and mom are happy and dancing together again.
