Dr. Mohammed Farid Edwards, M.D. ("Farid"), age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 14th. Born on Sunday, May 23, 1943, in Cape Town, South Africa, Farid was one of fifteen children and carried with him a lifelong sense of family, faith, and service.
Farid graduated from the University of Cape Town Medical School and came to the United States in 1967 to complete his residency/fellowship in anesthesiology at Albert Einstein Hospital in New York. In 1969, he married the love of his life, Margaret Beckenstrater, with whom he shared a devoted marriage until her passing in 2010.
Early in his career, Farid took a principled and courageous stand against the Apartheid government in South Africa. Refusing to return to a system that denied equal rights and dignity, he publicly challenged the South African government's discriminatory policies, even at great personal and professional risk. His actions reflected a lifelong commitment to justice, equality, and moral conviction.
Farid went on to have a distinguished medical career as an anesthesiologist, practicing primarily in Central Ohio. He served patients and colleagues at Grant Medical Center, The Ohio State University, and numerous surgical centers throughout the region. Known for his calm bedside manner, clinical excellence, and deep compassion, Farid earned the respect and gratitude of countless patients and coworkers.
A devout Muslim, Farid was deeply committed to his faith and was a dedicated member of the Muslim community in Columbus.
Farid is survived by his sons, Ahmed and Tamre (Heather); his beloved grandchildren, Cyrus (22), Sebastian (17), and Julian (16); great grandchild, Laythan (3 months); his siblings Niamaat, Maher, Ghaniem, and Hanief (Glenda); and countless nieces, nephews, and other members of the extended Edwards family.
Farid took immense pride in his family finding great joy in his children, grandchildren, great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews he cherished. Farid will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, warm smile, and strong convictions, as well as for his unwavering faith, his dedication to healing others, and the humility and grace with which he lived his life. May Allah grant him mercy, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him Jannah. Ameen. May He Rest In Peace.
