Mary D. Monken

Mary D. Monken, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2024, in her hometown of Saint Louis. She was born on July 3, 1954, to the late Gregory and Elva Hardebeck.

Mary will always be remembered for her unwavering love and dedication to her family. She was a devoted wife to the late Lawrence C. Monken for many happy years. They built a beautiful life together filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Mary was a pillar of strength and support for him throughout their journey together.

As a mother to Matthew (Elizabeth) Monken, Mary poured her heart and soul into nurturing her child. She loved Matthew unconditionally and provided him with the tools he needed to succeed in life. Her loving presence and guidance shaped Matthew into the wonderful person he is today.

Mary's greatest joy came from being a grandmother to Brendan Monken and Owen Monken. She showered them with love and affection and cherished every moment spent with them. Mary will forever be remembered as the best "Baba" who created special memories that will be treasured by Brendan and Owen throughout their lives.

Outside of her family role, Mary had various interests that brought joy to her life. She had an artistic flair which she utilized through gardening, crafts, and interior design. Her creative eye allowed her to transform any space into something magical. Mary's talent and passion for design were evident in every project she took on.

Mary also enjoyed spending time with friends, creating meaningful connections with everyone she met. Her warm smile and heartwarming nature made it easy for others to feel comfortable around her. She possessed an innate ability to bring people together in moments of joy and laughter.

One of Mary's proudest accomplishments was founding the "Ho-Ho-Ho Girls," a group of close-knit friends who shared a love for spreading holiday cheer. Their annual gatherings have touched the lives of many, leaving an enduring legacy of kindness and togetherness.

Mary graduated from Bishop DuBourg Class of 1972, where she formed lifelong friendships and created cherished memories. Her time in school played a significant role in shaping the person she became.

In her final moments, Mary was surrounded by her loved ones and was fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

To honor her life, a Celebration of Life service will be held on February 15, 2024, at John L. Ziegenhein and Sons Funeral Homes - South County Chapel in St. Louis. The visitation will begin at 4:00 PM and conclude at 8:00 PM. Additionally, a Mass will be held on February 16, 2024, at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic Church in St. Louis. The Mass will begin at 10:00 AM.

Mary's legacy will live on through her surviving family members: her adored sister Jane Hardebeck; loving brother Donald Hardebeck and sister-in-law Georgann Hardebeck; sister-in-law Julieanne McLaughlin; as well as her beloved grandsons Brendan Monken and Owen Monken.

During this time of sorrow, let us remember Mary D. Monken for the love she shared, the memories she created, and the impact she had on each life she touched. Her spirit will forever guide us as we navigate our own journeys.
