Mr. Monte W. Vails

Monte W. Vails, 79, of Columbus passed from this life on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 10:50 a.m. at his home.
Mr. Vails was born on June 30, 1944, in Columbus, the son of Joseph A. and Helen B. Merrill Vails. On July 16, 1976, he married Janet L. Lambert.
He was a 1962 graduate of Columbus High School and a Untied States Army Veteran.
Mr. Vails retired after 38 years of service from Cummins Engine Company where he was a Customer Quality Assurance Representative, he then went on to work 10 years for the Bartholomew County Assessor's Office, and lastly he was a courier for Columbus Regional Hospital. Throughout his career he always enjoyed farming and was very active in the farming community. He had a tremendous love for racing motorcycles when he was younger, playing golf, vacationing, and was always happy to help anyone. Above all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Janet L. Vails of Columbus; daughters, Michelle (Matthew) Moats of Columbus and Melissa (Phil) Smith of Columbus; grandchildren, Clark W. Moats, Grace L. Smith, Katelyn M. Smith; and a brother, Mick Vails of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Phillip, Mel, and Mack Vails.
In keeping with Mr. Vails' wishes cremation will take place and a memorial service will be 4:00 p.m. Friday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Andy Kilps officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 1:00 p.m. till time of service at the funeral home.
Military honors will be presented at the beginning of the service Friday by the Bartholomew Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given through the funeral home to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
