Montie Francis Speir, 71 years old, of Deming, New Mexico passed away peacefully on November 5th, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Montie was born on October 13th, 1953, in Deming, New Mexico, to Bill and Nadine Speir. He grew up on a farm in Luna County and formed many deep and meaningful lifelong friendships with those he met along the way. He always carried with him the values of optimism, endurance, patience, loyalty, family, and faith that shaped him throughout his life.
Montie spent most of his life as a farmer and rancher, working the dry land with a deep love and respect for nature. His dedication to the farm provided for his family and gave him great pride throughout his life. He was known for his strong work ethic, calm demeanor, sarcastic dad jokes, a strong faith in God, and an array of talents.
He was preceded in death by his parents Nadine and Bill Speir. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Rita Speir; children, Chip (Bernice) Speir and Jason Speir; grandchildren, Montiqua (Joram) Robbs, Julia (Red) Morris, Zak (Hannah) Speir, and Kason Speir; and great grandchildren, Montgomery Morris, Healan Robbs, Sloan Robbs, and a new baby on the way expected by Zak and Hannah. He is also survived by his sisters, Deon (Clinton) Woodward, Cheryl (Alan) Speir-Phillips, and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and outlaws! He was a loving husband, friend, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who took immense pride in his family, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Montie was a man who could always be counted on, whether for his sense of humor, a wise word, a helping hand, or a good laugh. He loved spending time with his family, and his grandchildren always looked forward to the stories he shared from his many years of trouble making. He was very active in the community, serving as president on the SWNM State Fair Board and Luna County Co-Op and as a member of the Farm Bureau Board, FSA committee and on the Soil Water and Conservation board. He held the title of kickball champion of the Speir family, holding back his skills for no-one! He also had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and could often be found driving around the farm, hiking in nature, searching for "treasures," hunting and fishing with his sons, grandson, and friends, and watching every sunrise and sunset.
A rosary will be held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Deming, NM on Wednesday, November 13th, 2024 at 6 pm with a preceding viewing at 5 pm. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church on Thursday, November 14th at 2 pm. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. A repast will directly follow the interment at the Holy Family Catholic Church.
Montie's love, wisdom, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of hard work, love of family and friends, and devotion to God will continue to inspire us every day. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever be cherished.

My deepest sympathy to the Speir family for the loss of their loved one.

I would like to share a story about Monty and his dad. I played a lot of golf with his dad, Bill. One day, while we were playing golf Bill said He couldn´t play golf the next weekend because they were going to be branding. I told him that was something I missed about our farm. I told him my two boys would never experience it. Bill said, "You and your boys come out and join us". I told him he didn´t want to be bothered with me and my two green horns. He said to just bring them boys on out at sunrise and be ready to work. So, we showed up, along with the rest of the family and a lot of neighbors. Bill said, I could help around the corrals to help get ready. And there stood Montie with three horses. Bill said, "Your boys can go with Monty to bring the cattle into the corrals." My two sons were cowboys for a day on a working ranch. And that´s a day we will never forget. My sons still talk about that day. That´s how the Speir family works. One of the busiest days of the year for them and they took time to show my boys what it was like to be around a working ranch for a day.

I love and would like to thank the Speir family for that day. Cal Gray (and boys)
