Susan L. (Betts) Hurt, passed from this life at 7:42 p.m. July 15, 2025, at the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Born on April 30, 1950, in Shelbyville, Indiana, Susan was a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.

The daughter of the late Harold Eugene and Pauline Bullock Betts, Susan grew up in a household that was always filled with love and laughter. She carried these values throughout her life, creating a nurturing home for her own family. Susan's siblings, Linda Henry of Franklin, Becky (David) Poynter of Morgantown, David Betts of Florida, Robert (Marsha) Betts of Martinsville, and Randy (Jenny) Betts of Brown County, remember her as a beacon of joy and support, always there to lend an ear or a helping hand.

Susan's journey through life was one of love and partnership, having married her soulmate, Art Hurt., on November 1, 1986; he survives. Susan's legacy also lives on through her beloved children, Stacy Shafer and her fiancé, Jason Eller of Springville, Jon Matthew Shafer and his fiancée, Lisa Gardner of Columbus, and Arin (Tim) Larrison of Brown County. She was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of generosity and kindness. Though she was preceded in death by her son, Gary Lee Shafer, grandson, Joshua Shafer, and brother, Stephen Betts, her memory will continue to be a guiding light for her family.

Susan's work ethic was evident in her career as a seamstress at the former Columbus Sportswear and later being employed at the Bradford Soap Factory. Her colleagues knew her as a dedicated and hardworking individual, always ready to put in the extra effort to ensure a job well done.

Outside of work, Susan was an avid outdoorswoman, she found solace and joy in camping, boating, and fishing. These activities were more than hobbies; they were the backdrop for precious moments spent with her family. Susan's love for the outdoors was only matched by her love for her family, with whom she cherished every opportunity to create lasting memories.

The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike; Pastor Tim Larrison will officiate. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 2 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. In keeping with the family's wishes, cremation will take place following the funeral service. In memory of Susan, memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
