Obituary published on Legacy.com by Watkins Heritage Chapel - Kansas City on Feb. 19, 2025.
Grace Scott-Golden was the second child born to Willie Mae Scott and the third and middle child born to Cornealious S. Scott Sr. on March 18, 1949, in
Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her father, her mother and one brother, Matthew.
Grace was educated in both the
Kansas City, MO and the Oakland, CA school district, graduating from Fremont High School in Oakland, CA in 1967. She moved back to
Kansas City, MO and attended Central Missouri State in Warrensburg for 2 years.
Grace accepted Christ at the age of 8 years old and was Baptist on Christmas in 1957 at Morning Star Baptist Church as a member of East Side Missionary Baptist Church where her father was the pastor. After moving to California, she joined five other churches in the attempt to find a church with the ethics of the church she was raised in. She finally found it at Haven of Rest Baptist Church after returning to
Kansas City, MO with Rev. Nathaniel Nelson as Pastor. Now she was an active member of Corinthian Baptist Church of Kansas City, with Rev Bobby Roberson, where she was a member there until her passing.
She was married twice. Her first marriage to Sylvester Thomas gifted her with her beloved son, Richard Brandon Thomas. She was also married to Theral Golden blessing her with three stepchildren, Latrice, Tramail and Terrance.
She worked for 28 years with Southern California Rapid Transit District which became Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority as a Bus Operator, then an instructor, then the first female Senior Instructor, an Assistant Manager of Operations, Manager of Operations, and finally back to her true love of Manager of Instructions. She retired two years early because God told her to go back to Kansas City to care for her parents. She retired in September 2003 and returned to Kansas City February 20, 2004. Her father passed on Thanksgiving, 2004 and she said that was the most profound 9 months that she spent with her father. She then asked God to give her mother a minimum of 10 years healthy life for her mother after her father passed. And He answered her prayer. Her mother passed 19 days short of the 10 years.
After retirement from MTA, she started to empty her bucket list. She wanted to learn how to swim, she did at the age of 55. She wanted to learn how to tap dance. She did from 2004 to 2007 with the Caruthers Dance Academy and people paid to see her dance at the Music Hall for 3 years! Hot Dog!! She had always wanted to be a realtor. She had a license in California, but circumstances prevented her from pursuing her dream. Once retired, to keep her from sitting at home watching Young and the Restless, she got her license for Missouri and Kansas and sold real estate for 3 years. Her bucket list was satisfied. In 2015, she became an Independent Beauty Consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics.
She realized that she was much like her father in that he was a teacher, a realtor and a gardener. In 2012, she followed in her father's footsteps, Grace started gardening, big time! This was not a bucket list item, it was a passion. She met many friends through her affiliation with Kansas City Community Gardens. It was her respite during her time as care giver.
Grace leaves to cherish her memories, her son, Richard Brandon Thomas, daughter in-law Jovon Thomas,Jurupa Valley, California; one sister, Wanda Scott-Broussard, Tuscan, AZ, three brothers, William M. Scott (Elreatha), San Jose, CA; Cornealious S. Scott, II, (Corrine), Hampton, VA; Rev. Steven E. Scott, Stafford, VA. She leaves, also, five grandchildren, Karley Stanley, Alyssa Corona, Dorian Thomas, Layla Thomas and Kiera Thomas, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
