Ms. Phyllis Ann Bates Thystrup, a beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Born in Spalding County, Georgia, on June 15, 1967, Phyllis graced the world with her vibrant spirit and unwavering kindness for fifty-eight remarkable years.
Phyllis was employed in the textiles industry, working at Standard Textile before moving to New Smyrna Beach where she worked for the American Legion. She had a passion for helping others. Whether through her career or in her personal life, Phyllis consistently strived to make a positive impact on those around her. Phyllis was known for her love of travel, where she found joy in exploring new places and creating memories with friends. She cherished the moments spent with loved ones and never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need. An avid dog lover, she shared countless joyful moments with her furry companions. Phyllis also delighted in fishing excursions and the beauty of beach sunsets.
Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Samantha (Thomas Storey) Hambrick, and her son, Frederick (Missy) Bates. She is also survived by her mother, Sherry Dutton Ellerbee, and her brothers, Frederick Bates, Jr. and J.D. Kinard. Phyllis was preceded in death by her father, Frederick Bates, Sr., and her son, Harley Hoard.
The family will hold a celebration of life for Phyllis at a later time.
