Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Murray Kerstetter, devoted father, husband and public servant, passed away on September 15, 2024 from injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Danny was born in Auburn, New York on December 23, 1978. The fourth of six siblings, Danny's childhood in the Finger Lakes region of New York, was highlighted by summers at their family "Carpe Diem" camp in the Thousand Islands begetting a life-long love of the water. Danny moved to Michigan in 2009 where he eventually laid down roots after meeting the love of his life, Katie. Danny briefly worked for the Detroit Red Wings before earning his builders license. He was a talented carpenter able to tackle significant residential projects and delight friends, family and his community with beautiful woodcraft. The beautiful home that Danny and his wife Katie built is filled with his work all lovingly designed and made for his children and their life together.
Danny's children were his life. He was a particularly hands-on and devoted father to his two sons August (3) and Daniel (5) and stepdaughter Taylor (13), who he embraced as his own. Everyone who loved and knew Danny was touched by his dedication and attentiveness as a father. There was nothing Danny loved more than spending time with his children whether on the water, at home, out in the community, or at school and sport functions. Danny was a true partner in his marriage. He was a generous, kind and selfless person who put his friends and family before himself.
Consistent with his character, Danny had wanted to be in law enforcement from a young age. With the encouragement of his wife, he finally decided to pursue this dream in 2021. In early 2023, Danny earned a position as a Motor Carrier Officer with the Michigan State Police after completing a lengthy application process and Academy. The brave men and women of the Michigan State Police stationed at Metro North Post became and extended part of Danny's family. He was proud to serve and gave his life doing his job.
Consistent with his wishes, Danny's organs were donated to save the lives of others. Danny passed surrounded by family at Detroit Receiving Hospital on Sunday and has joined his daughter Reagan in Heaven.
Danny is survived by his wife Catherine ("Katie") Taylor Kerstetter, their sons August and Daniel, stepdaughter Taylor Rivers, mother Kathryn O'Neill, father George (Jean) Kerstetter, siblings: Fritz (Laura) Middleton, Annie (Scott) Minnoe, George Jr. (Brandy), Jenny Fruehauf, Mary Oliver, Timmy (Bradley Thurston), Billy (Nicole), and was predeceased by his daughter Reagan Murray.
