Murelyn Deholas Stigall Ray, 76, of Somerset, Kentucky, was called to everlasting rest on Sunday, July 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on June 13, 1949, in Somerset, Kentucky, to Alex Dewey Stigall and Nettie Alberta Stigall (née Brown). In addition to her parents, Murelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Joseph Ray; her brothers Harvey Hershel Stigall, Alex Dewey Stigall Jr., Charles Harley Stigall, and Sidney Randolph Stigall.
Murelyn completed her education at Morehead State University, majoring in education and minoring in mental health, before moving to Louisville. She began her teaching career as a third-grade teacher, and in the summer of 1975, made a bold and independent decision to follow her dream of living in California. She packed up her maroon Buick Regal and headed west.
Before she left, she had already met Lou, who was pursuing her long distance. The two later flew back to Kentucky and got married in her sister Feryn's backyard, and then began their married life in Southern California. Murelyn worked as an executive secretary at a law firm and also did substitute teaching, with a little bit of modeling on the side.
Through their marriage, she lovingly welcomed Kyle Ray and Piper Ray (Clark) as wonderful bonus children, before later having Joshua and Rebecca.
Murelyn later chose to become a stay-at-home mom, pouring herself into raising her children. She was present for every season including sports, school events, and everyday life, bringing stability, warmth, and strength to her family.
Murelyn was a lifelong advocate for Jesus Christ. She gave selflessly in every chapter of life, but especially while caring for her husband through his declining health. Even while navigating her own journey, including two breast cancer diagnoses, she remained grounded in faith and love. She faced her health battles with quiet bravery, leaning fully on her relationship with Jesus Christ.
After Lou's passing, Murelyn found new rhythms and learned to care for herself while continuing to pour into those around her. Her faith remained the foundation of her life, and in her final days, she radiated the peace that comes from knowing her eternity was secure. Her healing came fully in the arms of her Savior.
Murelyn is survived by her son, Joshua (Melissa) Ray, daughter, Rebecca (Nate) Kruse, and her beloved grandchildren: Titus, Axton, Naomi, and Levi. She is also survived by her siblings: Mary A. Gilmore, Feryn S. Summers, Patsy R. Stigall of Louisville, Kentucky; Russell W. (Peggy) Stigall of Somerset, Kentucky; and Terry A. Stigall of Anchorage, Alaska, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will forever cherish her memory.
"But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint."
Isaiah 40:31
