Dr. Murle Wayne Shiveley
November 26, 1938 – January 5, 2026
Wayne Shiveley, a devoted family man and steady presence to all that knew him, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, at 87 years of age. Wayne was born November 26, 1938, in
Odessa, Missouri to his parents John Murle Shiveley and Helen Ruth Hudnall. Wayne was raised and worked on the family farm in Odessa. The farm was where he developed his work ethic and passion for gardening.
Wayne was a lifetime learner and a graduate of The University of Missouri where he received an Industrial Engineering degree and was in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program. He also was an avid runner and letterman on the cross-country team. It was at University of Missouri that he met the love of his life Margaret "Penny" Grace Shiveley.
As part of the NROTC program he served as an Engineer Officer on the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet, from 1960-1963 focusing on Anti-Submarine Warfare in the Pacific. Following his naval commitment, he reconnected with Penny and was married in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on August 28, 1965. They moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania where Wayne received his Doctorate of Engineering from Lehigh University. Wayne was passionate about education and also received a degree in Computer Science and an MBA from Virginia Tech. Additionally, he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) in 1985 and the Harvard University Senior Executive program in 1992.
He had a 36-year career as a public servant working in the Defense Communication Agency, Chief Scientist at Department of Justice, supporting the Attorney General for several years and as the Chief Architect for the FBI. Following his retirement from the FBI in 2006, he worked as an independent contractor for the National Terrorist Screening Center developing accurate database sharing between US agencies.
When he was not working, Wayne and Penny enjoyed social outings with friends, bridge games and traveling. Wayne loved his family as well as his jokes and stories. He was so proud of his three sons who he coached and trained in various sports growing up. He was always developing better training techniques, coaching strategies and never missed a game.
He was preceded in death by his brother, JW Shiveley II, and his sister, Kathryn Sonderegger. He is survived by his children and spouses; Wayne (Kristen) Shiveley, Oakton Virginia, Matt (Ann) Shiveley, Denver, Colorado, Brad (Katherine) Shiveley, Richmond Virginia; nine loving grandchildren (Adam, Grace, Ellie, Lily, Evan, Cade, Jack, Kate, and James. And his siblings Julia Wheeler and Terry (Ginny) Shiveley.
A celebration of Wayne's Life will take place at 12:00pm on Friday, February 13 at Vienna Presbyterian Church 124 Park St NE,
Vienna, VA 22180 with reception to follow at Bear Branch Tavern in Vienna 133 Maple Ave E,
Vienna, VA 22180.
